KOVACS, Billy J., 67, of Sterling, CT, passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2010 in the VA NJ Health Care Center, Lyons, NJ. Born in Sycamore, NY on October 5, 1943, Mr. Kovacs resided in Sterling, CT, before moving to Lyons, NJ over 2 years ago. He was formerly employed as Chief of Fire Control for the United States Navy serving on Submarines and also helped design the weapons panel for the U.S. Naval Trident Submarine when he was employed in Washington, D.C. Mr. Kovacs served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and later was a mechanic for several automobile dealerships and factories including Arnold's Bakery in CT and Clairol. He is the devoted father of Julie Ann Diaz, loving grandfather of Adam Diaz and Adrian Reque, cherished son of Vinita Kovacs and the late Steve Kovacs, dear brother of Kathy Keith and former husband of Isabella Kovacs. Private cremation services were under the direction of the South Plainfield Funeral Home, South Plainfield, NJ (908) 756-2800.


MAGOWAN, Edward R., 84, beloved husband for 61 years of Angela (Italiano) Magowan of Westerly, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, surrounded in love and song by members of his family. Ed was born in Hoboken, N.J., the son of the late James and Mary (Longridge) Magowan. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Winifred and Betty, and his brother, James. Ed served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, mostly on the USS Richmond. Throughout his life, he counted his Richmond shipmates as lifelong friends, attending many reunions with Angie all over the U.S. For seven years after the war, he was a police officer in New York City before he rejoined the Navy. Despite his height and size, he served in the U.S. submarine force based out of Groton, and he was a Submarine Escape Training Tank Instructor at the "Tank" on that base for many years. He was the Chief of the Boat on the USS Croaker and the USS Patrick Henry. He retired from the Navy after 31 total years of service as Senior Chief Torpedo Man in 1974. He subsequently worked at Electric Boat for 17 years and also served in the Westerly Police Reserve. Ed was a Communicant of St. Pius X Church. He will be remembered by his friends and family as a constant tinkerer who loved fixing cars, woodworking and playing with his steam engine collection. He greatly enjoyed sailing. In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by his seven children, Richard and his wife, Elsie, of Scituate; Mary Becker and her husband, Werner, of Westerly; Betty Anne Jerabeck and her husband, John, of Fairport, N.Y.; Eddie and his wife, Carol, of Pensacola, Fla.; Christine M. Magowan of Westerly; Kenneth J. Magowan of Westerly; and Stephen and his wife, Emily, of South Burlington, Vt.; as well as by 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Ed was also predeceased by grandson, Joshua Becker. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Pius X Church, 45 Elm St., Westerly. There will be no procession from the funeral home to the church. BUMBER, Paul Lawrence, 65, of Newberg, Oregon, passed away December 11, 2010. Paul was born in Lemont, IL on May 25, 1945 and also lived and went to school in Lockport. Paul is a Veteran of foreign wars and was a Naval and engineer who served on the submarines USS Cusk (SSG-348) and the USS Wahoo (SS-565). After the Navy he was a businessman and was involved in many interests. He loved family, laughter, traveling, fishing, nature and genealogy. Paul is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dorothy (Brown) Bumber; daughters, Paula Louise (Bumber) Iden, Amy L (Bumber) Fenwick, Lillian M. Dorough (Bumber) Davis, and Rhoda Lyn Dorough (Bumber) Halvorson; grandchildren, Steven Davis Jr., Edward Davis, Christopher Davis, Heather Davis, Jody Thomas Alford and Alijah Beu; great-grandson, Sean Davis; sisters, Sally (Bumber) Haller, Margie (Bumber) Neer, Barbara (Bumber) Evans. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Edward Bumber Sr. and Anna Lou Hodges Bumber and brother Thomas Bumber Jr. Funeral services are held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1212 Deborah Rd., Newberg, Oregon with Graveside Services at Willamette National Cemetery Oregon. MAYNARD Allison L., CAPT, USN, Ret., 86, of the 4300 block of Sandy Bay Drive, Virginia Beach, passed away Dec. 15, 2010. Captain Maynard, formerly from Wilmington, Vt., graduated from Wilmington High School in 1942. He was commissioned ensign upon graduation from the Naval Academy in June 1946. During his first 30 months of commissioned service he served in the destroyers, USS Johnston and USS William R. Rush, and in the destroyer escort USS Foss. After entering the Submarine Force in 1949 he qualified in submarines in USS Dogfish, then served in USS Crevalle and USS Spikefish. From 1953 to 1956 he was instructor in marine engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy. During this tour he completed law school at the University of Maryland, graduating with an L.L.B. degree. He then served 15 months as executive officer in USS Threadfin. From October 1957 until July 1960, he commanded USS Mackerel and USS Requin. In 1960 he attended the Naval War College at Newport, R.I. During the next two years he was assigned to the Strategic Plans Division of the office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He then assisted in setting up the second Polaris Submarine Squadron-in Rota, Spain, where he served as operations and readiness officer and as chief staff officer. He served four tours at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. During his tour in command of the Submarine Division, Captain Maynard was squadron commander of eight submarines, USS Argonaut, USS Carp, USS Redfin, USS Requin, USS Runner, USS Sea Lion, USS Torsk and the experimental submarine USS X-1 and was the commanding officer of USS LaSalle. Capt. Maynard served 30 years total in the U.S. Navy and 25 years as a maritime lawyer (Doctorate of Law). He was a Eucharistic minister at Little Creek Amphibious Base as well as an usher. Al is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Audrey Helen Maynard; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Dr. William Pamplin of New Hampshire, and grandchildren, Dr. James and Diana Pamplin of New Hampwhire, great-granddaughter, Rachel, and grandchildren, Amanda and Anthony French and great-grandsons, Benjamin and William French; another daughter, Pamela Galbreath, husband John and children Robert, Andrew and Daniel of Wyoming; niece and nephew, Norman and Andrea Breitenbach. He is also survived by his sisters, Jackie Bradley and Vera Deo of Vermont and two brothers, Reginald and Roger Maynard. He was predeceased by his brother, Peter Maynard of Vermont. A funeral will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel with Fr. James M. Shea officiating. The interment with military honors will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park.
