PETERSON, Jr., Winfield A. (Pete), died at Piper Shores, Scarborough, ME on September 10, 2009 of natural causes. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, something he took great pride in (along with the Brooklyn Dodgers). Pete attended Bowdoin and Dickenson Colleges, and went to medical school before serving in the Navy aboard the submarine USS Tench during WW II. He met and was outranked by his wife to be Eleaner Hunter, a Chief Yeoman in the Waves, when they were both stationed in New London, CT. He worked for NE Telephone as a district manager and lived in Natick, MA, where he raised 3 boys. He was an active volunteer, serving as a recreation commissioner and a Bacon Free Library trustee, and working with the Boy Scouts and the Telephone Pioneers. Pete loved to read and to talk to people of all types and persuasions and never missed an opportunity to do so. A bit of an affectionate curmudgeon when he died at 88, he will be warmly remembered by staff and friends at Piper Shores as well as his family: 3 sons and their wives, five grandsons, and two great granddaughters. (His and his wife's ashes will be scattered at sea as they wished.) Donations may be made to Beacon Hospice, 43 Atlantic Foden Rd., South Portland, ME 04106. Arrangements are by the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, Maine.
