I copied this off a motorcycle BBS I frequent; anybody know if this is a true story? Would like to know more about it if it's true.

From the Motorcycle BBS:
I've heard a story of a American WWII Submarine Captain who loved his Harley so much he used to take it with him on the sub and dismantle/assemble his bike every time he came into port.

I've heard it, and even seen a picture of the bike on the peir. Can't remember where though. I seem to remember an Engineman Chief Bean that had a Mini-Bike he took with him. Got really pissed when sent to a Nuke and couldn't take his toy.

I once carried a motorcycle from Pearl to Cape Canaveral in a balast loaded missile tube. You should have seen the look on the crane operator's face when
I opened the muzzle hatch and called for assistance.

Motorcycles ans submarines have always kinda gone together. Had a great motorcycle group for the Sailfish when we were home ported out of Pearl in 71 and 72. Remember a lot of us buying bikes in Japan when we were on West Pac. Didn't put them on the boat though.

Thanks; I found a letter written by his cousin which confirmed the motorcycle story. Fascinating stuff. It would be very interesting to know where he actually stowed the dismantle bike while underway. The letter raised the same question.
