Vernol Robert Jansen, Jr., 86, a native of Mobile, AL and a former resident of Raleigh, NC, Gulf Shores and Tuscaloosa, died September 7, 2009 at Hospice of West Alabama. He was born on May 30, 1923, the son of the late Judge Vernol R. Jansen and Jane Bailey Jansen. He attended the public schools of Mobile and graduated from Murphy High School in 1940. He attended Springhill College and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1943, and from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1948. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. During World War II he served in the Submarine Service of the United States Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, completing seven successful war patrols. [O-10, Blackfin, Baya] He remained active in the Ready Reserve and returned to active duty during the Korean conflict. He retired with the rank of Captain. He was admitted to the practice of law in 1949. In Mobile, he served as Deputy Circuit Solicitor and City Judge until he was appointed the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama in 1961. He was a member of the local, state and national Bar Associations and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr Jansen was a life-long active member of the Presbyterian Church. He served as a deacon and an elder in Government Street Presbyterian Church in Mobile, as an elder in White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, and as an elder and Clerk of Session in First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa. In 1971, he was elected General Secretary of the regional Synod of the Presbyterian Church in North Carolina where he served for ten years. In 1981, he was appointed Senior Policy Advisor for the Governor of North Carolina and served for six years under two governors. He was active in civic, professional, religious and veterans organizations throughout his life. He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Polly Drew Jansen; their daughter, Teresa Jansen Senter and her husband William Jeffress Senter, Jr. of Madison, MS; two grandchildren, William Drew Senter (Jennifer) of Jacksonville, AL and Katherine Senter Matthews (Brad) of Greensboro, NC. Also surviving are two sisters, Jane Jansen Green of Atlanta and Hazel Jansen Wallis-Manson of Hilton Head Island and two brothers-in-law, Harold D. Drew, Jr. (Suzanne) of Mobile and Robert A. Drew (Jackie) of Tuscaloosa and several nieces and nephews. At the family plot in Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile, a graveside service will be conducted by Dr. Charles Durham on Thursday, September 10, 209 at 1:00 P.M. A memorial service will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, September 13, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church in Tuscaloosa, conducted by Dr. Durham, with visitation to follow. Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 900 Greensboro Ave. Tuscaloosa, AL 35401 or Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Road, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404.


Godfrey Joseph Orbeck, 90 of Eagan, MN, formerly South Minneapolis, died September 1, 2009. Joe was born August 30, 1919 in West Union, MN and grew up in Wabasha, a river town he truly loved. He joined the US Navy when he was 19 and proudly served for 20 years as a Hospital Corpsman on submarines. He was on 9 war patrols in Japanese waters. When he retired from the Navy, he returned to college and became a teacher in the Mpls. Public Schools for another 20 years. Preeded in death by his wife, Agnes Carol. Survived by sons, David (Cindy) Orbeck and Tom (Clara) Orbeck; grandsons, Jason, Nicholas and Zachary; brother, Ed (Sherry) Orbeck; other relatives and friends.
