Subject: War Patrol

I was just reading about USS Louisville (SSN-724) and an artical stated that during operation Destert Storm she conducted the first war patrol by a submarine since WWII. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Louisville_(SSN-724) Does this mean the crew can wear the combat patrol pin?

I do believe that several boats were awarded it during Korea.

USS Perch (SSP-313)

USS Pickerel (SS-524)

To the best of my knowledge, the Combat Patrol Pin was not authorized for USS Louisville for operations during Desert Storm. There was a lot of discussion on that very issue, but I'm pretty sure in the end, they were not authorized the pin. I support that decision, not to take away anything from what Louisville or any other SSN did in support of Desert Shield/Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom or any other op in support on the war on terror, but there's no way to compare SSN ops against those enemies with little to no armed opposition (against the boat, that is) with WWII boat operations against an equally hostile force shooting back at you.

The PITTSBURGH was involved in Desert Storm as well. On display (don't have the image handy right now..but will post later) at one point was the battle flag of the PITTSBURGH at the Sub Force Museum in New London.. did the LOUISVILLE or other boats have battle flags after the Gulf War??

I guess you really are referring to USN Submarines only due to the POMS sending a few Submarines, Nuclear and Diesel, down to The Falklands during that war in 1982 ......that's where a Pommy submarine actually sank a ship.

Just nitpicking with the Facts.

You are absolutely correct Blue but the discussion is about the American Combat Patrol Pin

I'm sure that many Navies in WW II issued and in other conflicts have something like it they could and can award.

It is pretty well acknowledged that the Falklands sinking is just one of a number of submarine sinkings by various countries since WW II though the highest loss of life and was the largest warship sunk since WW II.

The statement was "...the first war patrol since WWII by a submarine..." Later the comment about the Combat Patrol Pin was added. My point was regarding the first section of the sentence.

I can see where you are coming from. I took it meaning an American sub. You are looking at it from a broader point of view. You are correct of course.

I was looking at it purely by the statement. Had he said, "....the first American submarine to conduct a war patrol since WWII...." then I would have kept my big mouth shut! *_*

And Blue, I would say the Falklands was truly more of a naval war than our envolvement off Iraq.
