The Vallejo SSBN 658 was built at Mare Island.
And, I believe the 658's sail was saved to be used at Mare Island for some display. |

The USS Plunger SSN-595, was built by Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
Launched on 9 December 1961, Commissioned 21 November 1962.
Deactivated 10 February 1989 at Subase, San Diego.
Defueled and Decommissioned at Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
Colors Struck 2 January 1990.
Recycled at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
Two of my Wahoo Base Shipmates were Pre-Commissioning Plankowners.
I was on the Decommissioning crew. Cradle to grave, as it were.
Gone but not forgotten.
