At random: When the nuclear powered submarine USS SEADRAGON surfaced at the North Pole while charting the Northwest passage in August 1960, the crew organized a baseball game. Because of Polar time differences, when a batter clouted a home run it would land in either the next day or in 'yesterday'.

Good article. For all you "book nuts' (like me) that are interested in the history of Mare Island Naval Shipyard, find a copy of "Sidewheelers to Nuclear Power, A Pictorial Essay Covering 123 Years At The Mare Island Naval Shipyard", Sue Lemmon and E.D. Wichels, Leeward Publications, Annapolis, Md, 1997. ISBN 77-90050

Good reading. Thanks Don.

Pig, thanks for the book tip. I will put it on my list to Santa.

The Vallejo SSBN 658 was built at Mare Island.

And, I believe the 658's sail was saved to be used at Mare Island for some display.

Only four pages in the entire book have color photos... all four, plus the color picture on the cover are SSBN-658.

The USS Plunger SSN-595, was built by Mare Island Naval Shipyard.

Launched on 9 December 1961, Commissioned 21 November 1962.
Deactivated 10 February 1989 at Subase, San Diego.
Defueled and Decommissioned at Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
Colors Struck 2 January 1990.
Recycled at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

Two of my Wahoo Base Shipmates were Pre-Commissioning Plankowners.
I was on the Decommissioning crew. Cradle to grave, as it were.
Gone but not forgotten.
