...I have a number of things I should be doing, but...

...can anyone tell me what these sayings mean?

"Don't pole-vault over horse turds."

- and -

"He was like a mackeral in moonlight - capable of stinking and shining at the same time."

'til then,

Cora

Never heard of either, sorry..

But it seems I've finally hit that too much time thing with this.

How much is a gazillion, exactly?

— johnt

Million, billion, trillion, quadrillion, quintillion, sextillion, septillion, octillion, novillion, decillion . . . lessee, a decillion is:

1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

. . . so there ain't no gazillion, it's right up there with zillion, bijillion, and uncountabillion . . . a made-up term.

Just so you know, here's the list of "named illions":

Billion has 9 zeros

Trillion has 12 zeros

Quadrillion has 15 zeros

Quintillion has 18 zeros

Sextillion has 21 zeros

Septillion has 24 zeros

Octillion has 27 zeros

Nonillion has 30 zeros

Decillion has 33 zeros

Undecillion has 36 zeros

Duodecillion has 39 zeros

Tredecillion has 42 zeros

Quattuordecillion has 45 zeros

Quindecillion has 48 zeros

Sexdecillion has 51 zeros

Septendecillion has 54 zeros

Octodecillion has 57 zeros

Novemdecillion has 60 zeros

Vigintillion has 63 zeros

Googol has 100 zeros.

Centillion has 303 zeros (except in Britain, where it has 600 zeros) ???? (Blue, this your fault???)

Googolplex has a googol of zeros

Seems to me the "Dont pole vault over horse turds" is another way of saying "Dont make mountains out of molehills. Don't have a clue on the other one.

I agree with the above. The second seems to me to be the same as the old saying where "He could fall in a pile of sh*t and come out smelling like roses." The type of person that may be a dirtbag/BS'r but always seems to get away with everything and come out on top.

or maybe the second one means that "if you step in bucket of "s--t", you can still come up smelling like a rose"?

...I can't find the paper that I copied these from, but as I remember it, the second one means, "He has an interesting life, but is an uninteresting person." Something like that.

BB, I think it's the reverse of what you said. "He could fall into a pile of sh*t and come out smelling like roses." meaning he was the type of person who was so good that nothing bad could happen to him. He didn't need to "get away" with anything to come out on top.

The pole vaulting over the mouse turds is a popular expression in the Airborne community meaning "Don't make a a big deal out of something that in the long run doesn't matter." My oldest daughter uses it all the time. "Dad, Don't pole vault over mouse turds. You're overkilling a subject that doesn't really make a damn." DEX

Sorry Jon, I've always been told and used it as "He was so slick he could do rotten crap and come out looking great." I'd offer that you google the phrase and see multiple examples of slick operating jerks, that manipulated vile situations and came out looking great.
