Subject: My Duty Station of Yesteryear

I was watching an old film about Hawaii that was done sometime in the 30's. They showed a view of the Royal Hawaian Hotel. It was standing all alone surrounded by Palm trees. It was a beautiful sight. Last time I was in Hawaii was 1989 and I had trouble finding the "Pink Lady" because she was lost in a sea of high rise hotels. What a shame! The commercialism of Waikiki turned a special lovely romantic area into something you can see anywhere, anytime. Like the title of a book, A Paradise Lost. After the bit about Waikiki they showed "From Here To Eternity". If somehow I could turn back the pages of time to years ago, I'd do it in a second.
The scent of the island is special. Too bad progress today means destruction of yesterday's paradise.
