Marshall Yerrinton Colley, 88, set sail for one last voyage on Saturday, August 8, 2009. Marshall was born to William and Frances Colley on April 28, 1921 in Chester, Pa. His Dad, William 'Bill' Colley, was born in Rockport, retired there and the sea was in the family's blood. At age 16 Marshall shipped aboard a 'tramp steamer' and sailed the Mediterranean as a 'cabin boy.' Seeing all the ports of call around the Middle East, he was hooked on the sea and in '38 enlisted in the Naval Reserve. At the outbreak of World War II, he served briefly on the USS Sproston (DD-577) in the Atlantic in '43 and then completed submarine training at New Groton, Conn. Marshall served on the USS Pipefish (SS-388) and participated in her last three war patrols out of Midway. He was either on active or reserve Naval duty from October 27, 1938 through the war and was Honorably Discharged on October 8, 1945. Marshall worked in the food industry for years and retired in 1980 from the position of Food Services Director (for public schools) with West Springfield. He and his second wife, Ellen (Burke) Colley, were active in the "Meals on Wheels" program for that city thereafter. Marshall's love was the ocean and he was active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was, for one year, Commander of Flotilla 901 in Springfield. He and Ellen owned and sailed a twin keel sail boat and roamed up and down the New England coast. Leaving port before him were his first wife, Lois (Drinkard), his second wife, Ellen, and his youngest son, Jeffrey. He leaves ashore his son, Richard Colley and his wife Kris of Los Angeles; his daughter, Jane Salce of Connecticut; and his only sibling, sister and Rockport resident, Ann Porter Colley; his stepchildren, Ellen (Dumais), Cynthia (Johnson), Wayne, James and Jeffrey Sawyer. He had six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jennifer, Satina, Luigi, Jason and Aaron and three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Shawn and Matthew. Marshall will be buried at sea by the US Navy. Arrangements are by the Burgess and Mackey Funeral Home, 201 Main St., Rockport.

Michael W. Stradley, 62, of Avon, passed away on Saturday (August 8, 2009). Born in Harrisburg, PA, son of Henry W. and Kathryn (Booser) Stradley of Harrisburg, PA, he grew up in Wilmington, DE and attended the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY where he met Janet and participated in the NROTC program. He graduated in 1968 receiving both his BA and a Commission in the US Navy and spent four years as an officer in Admiral Rickover's Nuclear Submarine Program. After leaving the Navy in 1972, he attended Oregon State University, from which he received a Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering in 1974. Michael and his family moved to Avon in 1976 and in 1978 he earned certification as a registered professional engineer in the state of Connecticut. Michael worked in the private sector until 1999. During this period his work included government research at Battelle Labs, nuclear power plant safety and information systems development at American Nuclear Insurers, and a variety of technical consulting and management positions. In 2001, Michael joined the faculty of Avon Old Farms School as a Mathematics teacher where much to his surprise he grew to love working with the students. He also became active in a variety of community service efforts, the school bicycle shop, which he founded, and the school's sustainability initiatives, which he fathered. He was particularly proud of the recent installation of a solar array on the roof of the school's hockey rink, the largest of its kind at any school in the state. It was his efforts and vision of a completely sustainable campus that made this a reality. Michael and Janet could often be seen biking, sailing, cross country skiing, or kayaking together, and he especially enjoyed the time he spent with family and friends at the home he and his sons built in the Adirondacks. Besides his parents he is survived by his wife of 41 years, Janet; two sons, Daniel J. Stradley of Vernon and Douglas W. Stradley (Cig Harvey) of Cambridge, MA; and two brothers, Gary Stradley and Mark Stradley both of Harrisburg, PA. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA, and a "Celebration of Michael's Life" will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2 p.m. at the Avon Old Farms School chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Avon Old Farms School, c/o Development Office, 500 Old Farms Road, Avon, CT 06001, where a special fund has been established to continue Mike's vision to develop a world class sustainability program on the Avon Old Farms campus. Arrangements have been entrusted to Carmon Funeral Home and Family Center, 301 Country Club Rd., Avon, www. carmonfuneralhome.com.
