Sebastiano Scarpato, 87, of Linden entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at RWJUH at Rahway. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral from the Leonard-Lee Funeral Home, 301 E. Blancke St., Linden, on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Elizabeth R.C. Church, Linden, at 10 a.m. Interment is in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visiting hours are on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Please visit www.leonardlee funeralhome.com. Sebastiano was born in Naples, Italy, came to the United States and New York City in 1958, and moved to Linden in 1984. He was a machinist for many years for the Fedders Corp. in Edison, retiring in 1987. He served in the submarine service in the Italian Navy during World War II. Sebastiano was an avid gardener and wine maker, loved animals, and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He was the beloved husband of the late Maria (Casalino) Scarpato, who died in 1984. Surviving are his loving companion of 25 years, Anna Villani; he was the father of Antonietta; brother of Pasqualina DeFalco of Italy; grandfather of Rachel and Thomas, and loving uncle of Maria Luisa Vampore-Giocoli of New York City. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, Tenn. 38105 would be appreciated.

Interesting...


I just saw something about the Italian Submarine fleet in the current issue of Proceedings.

Seems that just before WWII, Italy had one of the largest Submarine fleets, with about 115 boats.

Haven't read much about them, mostly the Germans and British in the Med.
