Went to Macy's this morning to pick up something for a lady recovering from surgery. While I was there, there was a female JG in whites with Dolphins...not medical, supply, or engineering insignia but the kind we wore with twin fish and a "bow's on" submarine. I keep hearing that all this talk about women on submarines is BS. This lady tells me that she "qualified" two years ago and is a rated underway watch stander. I didn't want to appear like an uninformed jerk (which I am) so I smiled and said..."I qualified in dieselboats in 1960..." She was obviously unimpressed and looked at me as if to say, "Back then, you cavemen, rode boats we eat for breakfast." What's all this arguing about women on boats?...seems a lot like arguing about NASCAR allowing donkey carts. It seems that while we were arguing about joint use potties, seperate but equal sleeping arrangements and light duty menstural chits....the damn parade passed us by. Somebody slipped a fast ball by us and caught us looking. DEX |

It's a different time and surly a different Submarine Service than we knew. For the better? Time will tell. Change is good as long as it's for the better, but, as we all are finding out some "change" isn't quite so good. |
