At random: USS R-6 was fitted the first prototype US submarine snorkel at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the closing months of the European part of WW II in April / May 1945 and successfully tested it off Fort Lauderdale, Fl. as the war against Japan ended in August 1945. The snorkel was removed from the USS R-6 and she was decommissioned and scrapped in September 1945.

Joseph A. St. Marie of Groton and formerly of Montville, died on July 2, 2009, at Fairview Nursing Home in Groton. He was born on June 5, 1946, in New London, the son of the late Joseph St. Marie and Ann Marie (Casserly) St. Marie of Knoxville, Tenn. Mr. St. Marie was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War in the submarine service. He retired from the Town of Montville where he was employed as a custodian. He was currently employed at the Mohegan Sun. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Sprafke) St. Marie; his son, Carl St. Marie of Norwich; his daughters, Julia Gorham of Norwich and Elisabeth Land of Oakdale; his brother, Matthew St. Marie of Knoxville, Tenn.; his sisters, Jo-Ann St. Marie Gibson of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Pamela McKeever of Florida; and his grandchildren, Eric and Erica Land. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, in St. John's Episcopal Church, 400 Main St., Niantic. Burial with military honors will follow in Union Cemetery, Niantic. A calling hour will be held for one hour prior to the church service. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Building Fund, PO Box 810, Niantic CT 06357. Don J. Maxwell, 40, of Oklahoma City, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009. He was born May 4, 1969 in Jay, OK. He grew up in Fort Smith, AR. He entered the US Navy in December 1987 and served aboard the Nuclear Submarine, the USS Sand Lance out of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He later graduated from Arkansas State University with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He was a skilled artisan and craftsman and successful business owner of Maxwell and Sons Home Remodeling and Repair. He was a volunteer youth coach of basketball, football, and soccer. He was a loving husband to his wife, Laura Miles Maxwell, and loving father to six children: Ashley, Taylor, Donnie, Amber, Victoria and Christopher. He is also survived by his father, Donald J. Maxwell Sr. and wife Debbie of Van Buren, AR; mother, Cheryl Casebolt Olsen and husband Terry of Fort Smith; brother, Reggie Maxwell of Fort Smith, AR; mother-in-law, Carolyn Miles Parker and husband Horace of OKC; father-in-law, Travis Miles of Watonga. Viewing will be Sunday, July 5, from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 6, at 3 p.m. at Smith & Kernke Chapel, 1401 NW 23rd St. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a memorial fund for the Maxwell children, c/o Liberty Bank, Attn: Rhonda Russell, PO Box 11075, Ft. William (Bill) Farley Young, 85, passed away on June 25, 2009 in Placerville, California. Bill was born in Tucson, Arizona on June 11, 1924 to Carl and Edithe Young. He was a loving brother to Barbara, adoring husband of 54 years to Laurie, father of five, grandfather of 12 and great- grandfather of two. Bill was a graduate of Tucson High School and attended Colorado College and the University of Texas. He was a WWII Submarine Veteran and was recalled to serve during the Korean conflict. He was a lifetime member of the Elks, the American Legion and WWII Submarine Veterans. Bill's professional career began when he opened his own insurance agency in Tucson. To spend more time with his growing family he began working for Valley National Bank in 1957. His career took him to First National Bank of San Jose, Hawaii National Bank and ended his banking career at Sunrise Bank in Roseville, California. Bill enjoyed creating spectacular gardens wherever he went, golfing, reading, but mostly being surrounded by his loving family. He loved to barbecue, cook Mexican food and sing Mexican music for his family. His quick wit and sense of humor made him a joy to be around. He was a strong and loving father that his children were very proud of and the best husband a woman could ever ask for. A celebration of his incredible life was held on June 26, 2009 in Bill's front yard. His ashes will be scattered in the ocean, by the Elks outrigger canoes, outside the reef in Waikiki, Hawaii.

William E. L."Bill" Smith, Sr., 85, of Jackson Avenue, North Augusta, SC, entered into rest July 3, 2009. Mr. Smith was a native of Richmond, Virginia having made North Augusta his home for the past 56 years. He was a member of the Belvedere First Baptist Church where he was a former Trustee and a member of the Golden Age Club, the Sheffield Club, Aiken Toastmaster's Club, North Augusta Exchange Club, The American Rose Society of South Carolina and Georgia and the Jesse C. Lynch Memorial American Legion Post #71. Mr. Smith was a US Navy Veteran of World War II where he served as a Submariner on the USS Roncador (SS-301), a retired Metallurgic Engineer with the E. I. DuPont Company at Savannah River Plant with 37 years of service, a charter member of the American Society of Metals and a 1950 graduate of Virginia Polytechnical Institute. He was the husband of 51 years to the late Mrs. Millie Smith. Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Helen Sutton Collins-Smith; three sons and daughters-in-law, William E.L. "Tad" and Judith Smith, Bayonne, NJ, Dr. Robert R.L. "Bob" and Lisa Smith, Baltimore, MD and Drs. John W.L. and Suzanne Smith, North Augusta; a daughter and son-in-law, Leigh Anne and Mark Collins, Sr., North Augusta; twelve grandchildren, Kayla Smith, Kenny Smith, Sarah Smith, Robin Everhart, Shelley Smith, Jay Smith, Travis Smith, Tyler Smith, Patrick Smith, Andrew Smith, Mark Collins, Jr. and Parker Collins; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Smith and Jack Everhart; four step children and 6 step grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Golden Age Club. Active Pallbearers will be Tyler Smith, Patrick Smith, Andrew Smith, Mark Collins, Jr. and Parker Collins. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this Sunday afternoon from 4 until 6. Funeral Services will be conducted Monday morning at 11 o'clock from the Belvedere First Baptist Church. Rev. John Meyer and Rev. Jerry T. Matthews officiating. Interment in Pineview Memorial Park with Veterans Honors rendered by the Jesse C. Lynch Memorial American Legion Post #71.
