At random: A typical modern submarine may require as many as 2,000 working drawings for the more than 7,000,000 items used in its construction. Blueprints from these drawings if placed end to end would make a strip 250 miles long.

Here is a guy who questions if we still need a US Navy...while he brings up some interesting points, I think he is off the mark.

In fact, if you look at the SSGNs and the newer Littoral Combat Ships, the Navy is moving to redefine its purpose. As to the Carriers; who else in the world has 12 mobile air bases.

Kinda reminds me of the brain trusts that said we don't need guns on airplanes during the Vietnam war. They were so wrong it was amazing that anyone ever listened to them. Oh, they made what sounded like a good case with their arguements but the reality of battle proved them wrong time and again. Airbrass who had come up through the ranks knew better. We should remember that the results of finding ourselves without the proper means to fight is a fatal mistake.

I wonder why we don't issue "letters of Marque" and commission privateers to go after the Somoli pirates. Let them go out and capture the bastards and sell the pirates to the ALPO corporation for dog food. Commissioning pirate hunters worked out pretty well for England ridding the Carribean when they cleaned out up that area. Once rogue nations start providing sanctuary...safe haven...and the right of free passage....you have to contend with protected breeding nests like Port Royal, Kingston and Marricaibo used to be....Once you start commissioning Privateers and adjudicating the right of ownership of captured ships and property in Prize Courts....Folks start closing up shop and getting the hell out of the business. Create SKULL AND CROSSBONES DOG CHOW..."Wonderful Doberman Food"...preferred meal of vicious mutts. DEX
