ACKART, Keith G., 79, of North Lake Ave., Troy, NY died Thursday, May 21, 2009. A native and lifelong resident of Troy, born April 18, 1930, son of the late Kirtland and Evelyn Ackart, he joined the US Navy during the Korean War, and served as a torpedoman on the submarine USS Tidewater. After his military service, he was a parts manager for the former Montgomery Wards store in Menands for many years. A sportsman, Mr. Ackart enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Brunswick Fish and Game Club. He was a member of the Trinity Church of Lansingburgh. He was sadly predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Mil Teal Ackart and a stepson, William Manning. Survivors include his daughter, Debra Ackart; granddaughter, Tara (Joseph) Clark and great-grandson, Dylan Coderre, all of Stillwater; stepchildren, Patricia Sheldrick of Averill Park, Joseph (Rosalie) Manning of Ky. and Charles Manning of Ariz. and their families; a sister, Constance Dufty of Melrose; and a lifelong friend, Ernie Beatty of Brunswick. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Church of Lansingburgh, 585 Fourth Ave. (115th St.), Troy, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke. Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville on Monday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Trinity Church in fond memory of Keith G. Ackart.

BONNER, Eugene "Gene" "Doc", 71, of North Berwick, ME, formerly a longtime resident of South Berwick, died on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at York Hospital following a short illness. Born in Allentown, Pa., on April 26, 1938, he was a son of Eugene and Helen (Yeakel) Bonner. Following school, he began a career serving his country in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Submarine Service, first aboard the USS Skate, then the USS Nautilus, the ship he held closest to his heart during his career and beyond. During his time aboard the Nautilus as the ship's "Doc" he supported the military mission during the fragile Cold War era. Gene was a member of the commissioning crew of the USS Trepang and crossed the Arctic Circle aboard her in 1971 and also served aboard the USS Jack before retiring after 22 years of service on April 1, 1976. Following retirement he was a very active life member of the Nautilus Alumni Association, supporting the mission of the crew of the Nautilus, working to ensure the museum and memories of her missions, and the families who served aboard her are kept alive. He was also a plank owner of the United States Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., and was a member of TREA and the American Legion Post 47, Rollinsford, N.H. Gene was a magna cum laude graduate of Franklin Pierce College with a BS in business. Following his military career, Gene, Alice and their family made their home in Dover, N.H., and Contoocook, N.H., while Gene was employed by Blue Cross, Blue Shield and Public Service Company of New Hampshire. He was assigned to Seabrook Station for over 10 years before his retirement. In 1982, Gene, Alice and their family made a home and became active members of the South Berwick community. Gene coached both Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and owned and operated AGB Cards and Collectible's, buying and selling baseball and other sports cards and memorabilia all over New England. In 2000 Gene and Alice moved to North Fort Meyers, Fla., for a few years before returning to the Berwicks in 2004. He is survived by his wife, Alice (Grayson) Bonner; their daughter, Susan Bonner Dearborn (Richard) and their daughter, Gretchen of Penacook; the Donald Hamm family of Macungie, Pa., and the Glen Starkweather family of Barrington, N.H. He was predeceased by his son, Michael Bonner; his parents; a sister, Patricia Pasquariello; and a special aunt, Edna Egge. A memorial service will be held on June 23 at 2 p.m. in the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine. Private burial at sea from the USS Nautilus will be held later. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com. AKIN, William Carroll, passed away on May 20, 2009 in San Marcos. He was born February 23, 1920, to Silas Nathan Akin and Stella Elizabeth Ford Akin in Fairy, Carroll served in the US Navy submarine service during World War II. He was a professor of mathematics at Southwest Texas State University. After his retirement, he worked for Pedernales Electric Company for about 10 years. Known for his wit, sense of humor, inventiveness and story-telling ability, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be sorely missed by his family and friends, as well as his caretakers, therapists and staff at Hays Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Preceded in death by his parents and brothers Norvell, Truman, Dalton, Elbert, Lloyd and Silas Nathan Jr., and son Kenneth Wayne, he is survived by his wife of 60 years Francine Schleicher Akin, children Betty Clough, Ronald Akin, Sharon Bragg (and husband Wilbert), Dan Akin (and wife Michele), and Kathy Rogers. Other survivors include his 13 grandchildren Silas Akin, Sarge Bragg (and wife Kristy), Noella Moss (and husband Kevin), Job Bragg, Micah Bragg, Rosanna Bragg, Kaytha Bragg, Sara Johnson (and husband Jeff), Jacob Akin, Craig Akin, Reed Rogers, Lauren Rogers and Paige Rogers. He is also survived by his five great-grandchildren Evan Bragg, Abby Bragg, Nathan Moss, Miranda Moss and Trystan Bragg. CALLIER, Jack Felix, 82, was born to Virgil and Lola Callier on February 24, 1927 in St. Louis, Missouri. Jack was a longtime resident of Rockport, Texas and had recently moved to Harlingen, Texas to be closer to his family. Jack began to serve our country at the age of 16. He is a WWII Veteran who served in the Asiatic Pacific and American Theaters on the USS Sandlance as a submariner and received the Victory Medal. Jack will be fondly remembered by those who crossed his path, a special man who never failed to make anyone laugh and would leave a long lasting impression of his knowledge and life experiences. Jack is survived by his wife of 60 years Maria L. Callier of Harlingen, his son Leonard (Helen) Callier of Harlingen, daughter Janet (Jim) Sutton of Arlington and grandchildren Rick, Savanah and Madison Callier of Harlingen. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Robert Sepulveda, Dr. Daniel Farray, and Dr. Habib Ghaddar. Special thanks to Knapp Medical Center (Surgical Floor, Telemetry Unit and Hospice), Weslaco Rehab and the Aurora House of Weslaco. Jack was deeply loved by his family and friends. He will be missed greatly. A military graveside service was held Friday, May 22, 2009, at Rio Grande Valley Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Mission, Texas, with the U.S. Navy providing military honors. Thanks for posting obits, Ken.  "Doc" Bonner was a beloved member of USS Nautilus crew.  I only had the occasion of meeting him once, but his duty and love of his boat was truly outstanding. 

I will ask Jim Irwin from Albany-Saratoga Base about Keith Ackart.

For the first year or so of Korean War the Tidewater was home to COMSUBGRU 3 so that may have been the story.
