HAILEY, Rufus Benjamin "Pete", CDR, USN, Ret., 87, of Sevierville, TN passed away Friday, May 1, 2009. He was born May 25, 1921, in Ontario, VA. Following two years at Virginia Tech, he graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1943, (Class of 1944). Following graduation from Submarine School, he reported to SUBPAC and completed seven war patrols aboard the USS Perch (SS-313), ending his wartime career in Tokyo Bay. After return to the States, and marrying Mary Louise Waters, he served on USS Pomfret (SS-391) and USS Greenfish (SS-351). He resigned from the Navy in 1947 and graduated from Washington and Lee University Law School in 1950. Recalled to active duty in Korean War, he served two Years on the staff of COMSUBLANT. He retired as Commander, USNR. Civic life included 55 years as a lawyer; real estate ventures; developer of Forbidden Caverns; founding chairman of the Robert F. Thomas Medical Foundation; served on Tennessee State Board of Education; served as University of Tennessee Trustee; served as Morristown College Trustee; served as Holston Home for Children Trustee; and founding chairman of the Sevier County Veterans Monument Association. He taught the Youth Class at the Gatlinburg Methodist Church for 18 years and later the Men's Bible Class at the First United Methodist Church in Sevierville. After two wars and 55 years of law practice, he believed that Alex Hailey was right when he said, "Find the good and praise it." Survivors: wife of 64 years, Mary Louise Waters Hailey; son, John Benjamin Hailey (Helene); daughter, Rachel Hailey Haywood (Charles); step grandchildren, Kiera Tippitt and Alex Tippitt; brother-in-law, John B. Waters, Jr.; several nieces and nephews; very special friend, Louise McCarter; devoted nurse, Tim Zeller; caregivers, Virginia Soria, and Helen Greenlee. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First United Methodist, Church 214 Cedar Street, Sevierville, TN 37862 or Holston Home for Children, P. O. Box 188, Greeneville, TN 37744. Funeral service 7 PM Monday at First United Methodist Church in Sevierville. Family and friends will leave Atchley Funeral Home at 10 AM Tuesday in procession to Shiloh Cemetery for interment. Honorary pallbearers will be Sevier County Bar Association and members of Smoky Mountain Thunder. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Monday at First United Methodist Church, Sevierville. ELLIS, Floyd Wilkie, LT, USN, Ret., 89, of Groton, CT passed away on Friday, May 1, 2009, at his residence. He was born November 24, 1919, in a sharecropper's house belonging to rich Indians on a farm south of Wynnewood, Okla., to James J. and Nora (Wells) Ellis. Floyd was a well known amateur boxer in Oklahoma in the late 1930s, winning championships in three weight divisions. He graduated from Wynnewood High School in 1935 and joined the Navy on March 1941 in Galveston, Tex. He liked to say he was a draft dodger because he enlisted in the Navy before being drafted. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, and fired rifles at the attacking planes. He went into the submarine service and served 11 war patrols, three aboard a Gato class submarine with his older brother, J.D. Ellis. The 11 patrols resulted in 29 ships sunk or damaged. He married Josephine Franciosi on Aug. 17, 1946. After the war he remained in the Navy and was one of the few senior and master chiefs. He accepted a commission to lieutenant junior grade in 1960 and served on SUBLANT staff and on the USS Hunley. He finished his career as an instructor at the Sub School at the U.S. Submarine Base in Groton, retiring in 1967. He then worked at Electric Boat Co for 10 years and TRACOR for over three years, retiring in 1981. Following his retirement, he devoted himself to his second love, golf. He was the club champion at the US Submarine Base Golf Course in 1977 and lost in the finals in 1982. He was an active member of the Groton Heights Baptist Church, a life member of Submarine Veterans of WWII, Fleet Reserve, Branch 20, and the Retired Officers Assoc. He was an active volunteer driver for the Cancer Society. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Jack, Gary, and Robert, all of Groton, two grandsons, Jeffrey and Keith of Pawcatuck, a great-granddaughter, Jasmine, and a sister, Clara "Katty" Hedrick of Kilgore, Tex. He was predeceased by three brothers and a sister. Funeral services and interment in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery with military honors will be private. Byles-Groton Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements. Donations in his memory may be directed to the Groton Heights Baptist Church, 72 Broad St., Groton CT 06340.

SCHLENKER, III, Robert "Rob" William, 54, of Ellabell, Georgia, died Thursday, April 30, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Born in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, he was a son of Lourdes Garzon Winsor and the late Robert William Schlenker, Jr. Rob was of the Methodist faith and was a United States Navy veteran having served as a submariner and diver. He was an assistant manager for AMF Bowling Center on Tibet Avenue and was an art collector. Before coming to Savannah, Rob spent 26 years in the hospitality industry in St. Thomas U. S. Virgin Islands. His favorite hobby was spending time with his family and friends. Surviving are his companion of ten years, Dorothy "Dot" Coe of the home; his mother and step-father, Lourdes and George Winsor of Hebron, Maryland; two brothers, Mark E. Schlenker and his wife, Sandy, of Havre de Grace, Maryland, and David A. Schlenker and his wife, Adrienne, of Street, Maryland, and one niece and four nephews, Matthew Hoffman, Alexis Price, Noah Price, Brandon Price and Garrett Schlenker. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Monday at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue. The funeral service will be held at 7 o'clock Monday evening in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Dr. Samuel W. Watkins. Interment will be private.
