At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

Subject: Astronomers declare February no longer a month

Emboldened by their success in declaring Pluto not a planet, the International Astronomical Union determined this week by a close vote that February is too short to be considered a true month. It has, however, been granted the newly created status of “dwarf month.” It shares this dubious distinction with several other calendar time spans, including Labor Day Weekend, Christmas Vacation, and the Time Between When You Were Supposed to Get Your Oil Changed and When You Actually Did.

“It only seems fair,” said IAU President Ron Eckers. “February reaches a peak size of 29 days, averaging only 28 days for 75 percent of the time. Recent research has shown that other periods, such as the Time Between When You Were Supposed to Get Your Oil Changed and When You Actually Did, often exceed this meager time frame. In fact, this erratic behavior only strengthens our case that February does not belong in the same classification as the eleven ‘true’ months.”

Eckers also warned that the crop of 30-day “so-called” months should be careful to maintain their number of days. “They’re already cutting it pretty close in my book.”

Well hell, Ric, the way I been racking up the years, I'm not so sure they ain't shaved every 3rd or 4th one off the calander already. Seems like only about a couple years ago I reported to GLNTC as a shave-tail boot (3/24/60)!

John you've got that right. It seems just a little while ago that I reported into NTC San Diego (12/18/50)! That was back in 'the good ole days' too... They even improved when I got my dolphins in April of '61!

Well, in the old days, (and I mean old, Roman Republic days), they added a month every so many years to make the calender fit the seasons better. The month was usually added at the end of the year, if my memory is correct. Augustus finally consulted with an astronomer from Egypt and devised the Julian calender to help end confusion. Later came the Gregorian calender which we use today.
