BONES, John L., 84, passed away April 22, 2009. He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana November 27, 1924, joined the Navy when he was 16 years old in 1940, and served over 6 years in the Submarine Service in WWII. John was a Real Estate broker for 43 years. After selling his office, he went to work at The House of Realty until he retired. He also was an outside salesman for Rother Auto Parts, a credit manager for Montgomery Ward’s, and worked in logging industries many years ago. He leaves his wife Helen of 44 years, daughter Kristie LaMattina, daughter Renea Holloway (Marc), grandchildren Sherada, Bryce Holloway, Jeffrey, Kaley, Stacie LaMattina two great grandchildren, and his sister Peggy Rusnak (Tony) of Erie, PA, He, was a life member of the "Silent Service for Submarine Veterans, a member of the Cuttlefish base, Anderson, CA," a member of the Masonic Lodge #254. His family will honor his wishes, there will be no services. However at a later date the "Cuttlefish" members will have a burial, for him and family only at the Veterans Cemetery in Igo. HUGHES, Robert "Pappy" Reginald, 79, Korean conflict veteran and Navy retiree, of 192 Woodchuck Lane, died Monday the April 20, 2009, at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain after a long battle with COPD. Bob "Pappy" was born November 2, 1929, in Berlin, NH, the son of Reginald Thomas Hughes and Alice Dion Hughes Bourassa, both of Berlin. The many activities that were major influences in his life started at an early age as an altar boy at St. Kieran Church in Berlin, NH, a cheerleader at Berlin High School and a member of the Nansen Ski Club. As life moved forward, Bob spent most of his life in service to his country aboard many ships in the US Navy as well as an instructor at the US Submarine Base in Groton. Starting his career in 1948, he attended boot camp in Great Lakes, and then went aboard his first ship in 1951, the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard. In 1953 he boarded the USS Neptune, in 1956 the USS Papago, and in 1959 he attended submarine school in New London. After completing school, he boarded his first sub, the USS Sea Owl (SS-405), in 1959 and was on board until 1961. After his first tour of duty aboard the Sea Owl, he took some time to go back to Submarine School in New London as an instructor until 1964. He finished his Navy career on five additional submarine tours; in 1964 the USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608), in 1966 he was back on the USS Sea Owl, in 1967 he boarded the USS Grouper (SS-214), in 1968 the USS Becuna (SS-319), and the last submarine he joined was in 1969, the USS Entemedor (SS-340), the last submarine assignment before his retirement. After he completed his Navy career he worked for Electric Boat and Bechtel Corp., which moved him into the southern states for sometime. In the late 1980s he moved back to his birth state of New Hampshire where he eventually retired from Troy Mills. Bob was an avid bowler for many years, loved model building, and tooling leather. Bob was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, the Sea Owl Assc., the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion, Post 27 of Litchfield. Bob is preceded by his granddaughter, Meghan. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Elizabeth J. Watkins born in Groveton, N.H., currently residing in Harwinton, Conn., and their five children and their respective spouses, Laurence of E. Swanzey of New Hampshire, Jane Bonville of Harwinton, Richard of Cornelia, Ga., Robert of Keene of New Hampshire, and Leah Gladson of Austell, Ga.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Additionally he is survived by his mother's brother, George Dion, who was very dear to his heart and at 90, is still residing in Berlin, N.H. At the request of the deceased, no services will be held until he can be joined by his wife, so that they may be interned together.

HOOVER, James F., 63, passed away after a courageous three year battle with leukemia. Hhusband of Marjorie (nee Gaca); father of Cynthia (Robert) Naegele and James D. (Annie); "papa" of Tori, Tyler, Nick, Christian, Nicholas, Leah and Robby; brother of Mary Prout and Dave (Carol) (all of Youngstown); son-in-law of James Gaca; uncle of Wes (Holly) and Linda Prout, Shawna (Mike) Gilligan, and Jim Gaca. US Navy Veteran. Served aboard the USS Hardhead and the nuclear submarine USS Theodore Roosevelt. Employed at Republic/LTV Steel for 35 years; graduate of Youngstown State University, 1975 with a B.S. in Accounting. VISITATION SUNDAY 2-4 AND 6-8 P.M. AT CRACIUN FUNERAL HOME, 14925 E. BAGLEY RD., MIDDLEBURG HTS. Funeral Mass Monday, 9:30 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church. Interment Woodvale Cemetery. Online condolences at www.mem.com
