At random: Nautilus has long been a popular name for a submarine. Some of the more famous of these are Robert Fulton's NAUTILUS (1800), Jules Verne's fictional Nautilus, and the NAUTILUS of Sir Hubert Wilkins in which he attempted a voyage to the North Pole under the ice (1931). There have also been three U.S. submarines of that name, including the world's first nuclear powered submarine built by the Electric Boat Division.

All I ever heard them called were Dolphins. Maybe they call them something else in different countries.

Yeah, we call them......'Dolphins', as we actually depict Dolphins as our Qualification Badge....funny that! *_*

And for those that don't know, we don't differentiate between Officers and Enlisted....we all wear Gold Dolphins.

Darrin, Paul has the closest answer.  The origin of the Dolphins is of the dolphin fish, which were the attendents of Posieden, so I am "assuming" that it would be Greek in origin.  You can check it out at http://www.jcs-group.com/military/rank/sub.html. There is a whole long story about them.

The dolphin pin dates back to June 13, 1923.

The fish was named Lee Roy; had a sister named Lucille; she went to school with Ralph.

....(maybe)... if you look at the pin design and look at classically portrayed Mediterranean dolphin, (porpoise), and its history of protecting mariners you will no doubt see the connection to our dolphin pin.

I recently got an email from one of my Alumni Associations.
It was a story about being asked on a Qual Board for the specific names of the two dolphins on the pin.
The correct answer was "Castor and Pollux"(the Gemini Twins from Greek mythology).

I had never heard or read that before. Can anyone here verify that, and/or provide a reference?

Donald, that could very well be a "truth" as Caster and Pollux are supposed to be the patrons of sailors.
