Subject: USS Spadefish SS-411 Memorabilia

Last Night on PBS's "Antiques Roadshow" from Grand Rapids MI there was the son of a WWII veteran who served on the Spadefish as a FC1. He had a Spadefish battle flag, a FC Logbook and a wheel, which they kept referring to as the "ships wheel". The wheel appeared to be made of brass/bronze, about 18"-20" in diameter and had Spadefish stamped on it. The boats I was on had a wheel (helm) that was in the 34"-36" diameter range with the emergency steering wheel in the 8"-10" range. Did anyone else see this? The appraiser gave him a $5,000 estimate.

Yeah, I saw it too. I was thinking that maybe the wheel was from the Engine room for engine exhaust. It could have been from the helm down in control those were much smaller. It sure wasn't the one from in the conn.
