At random: Modern nuclear submarines can travel faster submerged than they can on the surface. They can fully submerge in less than a minute.

IBACH, Sr., Robert W., 82, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 to be with his Loving Lord and was surrounded by his loving family. Bob, as he was known to his friends and colleagues, was born on January 11, 1927 in the Bronx, New York to Ernest and Dora Ibach. He was raised there along with his brother Jack, presently of Cape Coral, FL (wife Marguerite). Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, Sue Ellen of Mount Dora, FL; son Robert, Jr. (Vera) of Sarasota, FL and Chicago, IL; daughters Judith Brookins (Michael) and Carol Norsesian (Dennis) of Winter Springs, FL; grandchildren Kevin and Kelsey Ibach, John and Christie Ferro, Carly and Sean Norsesian, Heather Brookins and Sandra Hall; great-grandchildren Jacob and Parker Ferro, Connor Kowalczyk and Dustin Hall, Jr.; and his faithful "best friends" Buck and Tinkerbell. Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Elinore, who passed away in 1976. Bob served during World War II in the Navy's submarine division between January 1944 to May 1946 as a Fireman 1st Class V6, and his missions included tours with the USS CABRILLA (SS-288), USS POMPODOM (SS-486), USS ARCHER-FISH (SS-311) and Submarine Division 161. He was on board the ARCHER-FISH when it entered Tokyo Bay with the fleet in September, 1945 to accept the Japanese surrender of WWII and then departed for Pearl Harbor a few days later. Bob was a graduate of the prestigious Bronx High School of Science and upon his return to the States and receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy on May 12, 1946 he joined the Grand Union Company, a prominent supermarket chain based on the East Coast. There he worked his way from clerk to personnel director while going to night school at City College of New York to earn his degree. He oversaw Grand Union's division in Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and the District of Columbia for 16 years, ending in 1989 when he joined the Airline Pilots Association as a labor contract negotiator, based in south FL. He retired from ALPA in 1993 and relocated to beautiful Mount Dora, FL where his many local interests and community service included St. Patrick's Church, the American Legion and volunteer work with the Ice House Theater. On two occasions he worked his way onto the stage as a cast member for the performances, much to the delight of friends and family. Bob loved to grill, and his cookouts were always a memorable event for those who attended. He was also a devoted Chicago Cubs baseball fan, thanks to his son who worked as PR director for the team, and the Cubbies always gave him another reason to "wait til next year." He enjoyed reading, especially anything that involved the Navy and submarines. He dearly loved his country. As a fellow member of the ARCHER-FISH proclaimed in a fitting tribute, "On your final patrol-Sailor Rest Your Oar." Funeral service to be held on Tuesday, April 14th at 11AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Mt. Dora; internment to follow at Pine Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to: Clinical Research Unit Fund, Moffitt Cancer Center Foundation, 12902 Magnolia Dr., UTC-FOUND, Tampa, FL 33612-9416 and Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park Rd., Tavares, FL 32778-9660. Arrangements are by ALLEN J. HARDEN FUNERAL HOME, 1800 N. Donnelly Street, Mount Dora, FL 32757. 352-383-8178. (www.allenjharden.com)
