My brother is talking about a steward's mate 1st Class (?) conducting church services. How would I write his name and rank? StM/1C...or...would it be SM/1C?

The proper way would be StM1c. (with the lower case 't' and 'c') Later changed to SD1

SM = "Signalman

StM1c or StM1/c is correct for Stewardsmate.

Cora, the Steward Mate rating letters were "SD", so he would be SD1.

What Gil said. I was a Stewardsmate and SD is the proper designation.

I think she is reading from WWII patrol reports and at that time the Stewardsmate rating as we know it was written as StM.

Anyone had a Bluejackets manual from WW II? It will have the correct designator. I know many folks used a lot of different shorthands. Sometimes Stews were called Mess Attendants, Stewards, Offices Cooks, etc.
