PLUMMER, Galen Robert, CAPT, USN, Ret., 70, died from a stroke Tuesday, March 24, 2009, in his home. Born November, 16, 1938, in Milo, he was the son of Frank E. and Hermia (Campbell) Plummer. He graduated from Robert W. Traip Academy, Kittery Point, in 1958 and Columbia University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering science. After college he received a commission in the U.S. Navy and was accepted for duty in the Navy's Nuclear Propulsion Program and submarines. Career highlights include: serving in seven submarines culminating with commands of the nuclear attack USS Archerfish - SSN 678 and nuclear attack Submarine Squadron Seven in Hawaii; program manager of Nuclear Propulsion Program and submarine detailer; and chief, Strategic Command and Control Division for the Chairman of The Joint Chief's of Staff. He retired from the Navy in 1992 as a captain after 36 years of service. In May 1994, he married Barbara (English) Murray in Alexandria, Va. They moved with his daughter, Rebecca, to Northport. Moving into his dream home overlooking Penobscot Bay brought him full circle to the time he first saw the water as a child in Searsport. Capt. Plummer began his second career after retirement through church and community service, specifically: various outreach projects with Belfast United Methodist Church, board member of Camden Conference and Penobscot Marine Museum, supporting roles in the Belfast Game Loft, teaching and attending Senior College at the Hutchinson Center, and substitute teaching in the Belfast school system. Friends and neighbors could always count on Galen to lend a helping hand. He was predeceased by his first wife, Regina (Conklin) Plummer, the mother of his three children; and one brother, Gerald L. Plummer. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Plummer of Northport; his three children, David Plummer of Berryville, Va., Sandy Stroud of Honolulu and Rebecca Plummer of New York City; his stepchildren, Juanita Rogers of Alexandria, Va., and Kevin Fletcher of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren; two sisters, Sandra Plummer Hooper of Kittery Point and Shirley Johnson of Stafford, Va.; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service with a reception afterward will be held in honor of Capt. Plummer 3 p.m. Sunday, April 5, at Belfast United Methodist Church, 23 Mill Lane, Belfast, with the Rev. LOYD, Raymond Dale, 89, of 102 W. Finley Ave., died at 12:09 a.m. March 26, 2009, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.He was born March 21, 1920, in Baker, Mo., to Joseph L. and Edna J. Callahan Loyd. He married Roberta Maxine Brown July 24, 1944, in Unionville, Mo. He served on a submarine with the US Navy during World War II. He farmed southeast of Unionville, Mo., moving to Ottumwa in 1955. He worked for Ottumwa Foundry, city of Ottumwa and retired from Falco in Fairfield in 1985 after 21 years of service. He was a member of Hillside Bible Church in Oskaloosa.Surviving is his wife, Roberta Maxine; a son, Jerald E. (Cathy) Loyd of Ottumwa; a daughter, Paulette (David) Simons of Newton; six grandchildren, Max Loyd, Brandy Loyd-Jones, Rachel, Rebecca, Samuel and Ruth Simons; three great-grandchildren, Drew-Shawn Jones, Whitney Loyd and Jaclynn Jones; a brother, Maxwell Loyd of Clinton, Mo.; and a sister, Aldine Edwards of Clinton, Mo.He was preceded in death by an infant son, Eugene; a granddaughter, Wendy Michelle Loyd; two brothers, Curtis and Wallace Loyd.Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with Milo Vande Krol officiating. Burial will be in the Union Church Cemetery, Unionville, Mo.Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday with the family present from 5-7 p.m. Monday.Memorials may be made to Hillside Bible Church in Oskaloosa.Obituary may be viewed at: www.legacy.com/ottumwacourier/Obituaries.asp
