GILLIS, Arthur W. CDR, USN, Ret., 88, died March 25, 2009, in the loving care of the aides and nurses of Palm Gardens of Clearwater and the Burgundy team of Hospice of Florida Suncoast. Born 1920, in Raeford, NC he moved to Clearwater in 1974, from Springfield, VA where he was a High School Mathematics teacher in Fairfax County Schools, VA. A big Rays fan, he was a star outfielder at the U.S. Naval Academy "Slugger Gillis" graduating in 1943. He survived the Battle of Leyte Gulf (WWII) as the gunnery officer for the destroyer, USS Sproston. He later served as a submariner. He received a Masters degree from the U. of Pittsburg in Petroleum Logistics in 1958, and later retired from the Navy while working at the Military Petroleum Supply Agency. He was a Lifetime member of Military Officers and USNC associations. An avid golfer he served as an officer in the TOW Men's Golf association among many other volunteer activities. Active in his church and a church officer he attended Northwood Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lura; daughter, Joan Baker; granddaughters Analisa and Erica; and his brother, Harold. The family will receive friends and family at the funeral home from 12 1:30 Sunday, March 29th. A service will follow at 1:30 pm. Moss Feaster Funeral Home, Dunedin 727-562-2040

HENDRICKS, Albert D., 87, passed away March 25, 2009 in Dallas, TX. Albert was born November 26, 1921 in Lisbon, TX and was a veteran of WW II, serving in the US Submarine Service. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Helen and his brother Charles Y. Hendricks. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law David and Angela Hendricks; grandchildren Laura and Michael Hendricks; brother Jesse Elmer Hendricks; and five nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday March 28, 2009 at the Funeral Home; Visitation will began one hour before the service. Interment will be at D/FW National Cemetery on Monday March 30, 2009 at 11:30 AM. Memorials may be made to his church, First Missionary Baptist Church of Cockrell Hill, 4128 W. KOETZ, Leroy Earl., 84 , affectionately nicknamed "Sonny", passed away in Pensacola, Florida March 24, 2009. He was born March 31, 1924, and raised, in Glenview, IL. A graduate of New Trier High School, Wilmette, Illinois-class of 1942, Leroy served proudly as a submariner in the Navy during WWII and was an active member of the USS Batfish (SS 310) reunions in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Leroy and Mary Ann resided in Deerfield, Illinois for 30 years and he worked as an electrical contractor for self-owned Glenview Electric before retiring to Pensacola in 1979. He was a retired member of electrician's union IBEW 134. He was preceded in death by parents Leroy Max and Pearl Marie. Husband of Mary Ann, nee Henrickson; father of Leroy J., John R., Marilee (Pat) Dalbey, and Amy (Tim) Hughes; grandfather of Timothy, Sarah and Elizabeth Hughes, Jason and Megan Dalbey, and Jeffrey and Jena Koetz; and brother of Carol Jean (Delmar) Johnson. A memorial service is to be held on Saturday, March 28 at 11 A.M. at Mustin Beach Officer's Club at Pensacola Naval Air Station. The family would like to thank the staff at Creekside Senior Village and Covenant Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Leroy E. Koetz to Covenant Hospice and the USS Batfish (SS-310) Muskogee War Memorial Park, PO Box 253, Muskogee, OK, 74402.

MITCHELL, Roy Lee, 82, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, March 23, 2009. Born February 16, 1927 in Pulaski, Virginia to Henry Stanger Mitchell and Emma K. Turner Mitchell. He was a QMC with the U.S. Navel Submarine Service for 23 years. Preceded in death by his son, James Mitchell; great grandson, David Mitchell; and sister, Louise Dunford. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eleanor Mitchell; grandchildren, James Mitchell, Jr. of Knoxville, Hailiegh, Stash, Cade and Amanda Cartwright of Branford, Florida and Scott Schmenk of Dixon, Tennessee; great grandchildren, Ricky Mitchell of Knoxville, Zach Benjamin of Knoxville; sister, Pauline Harmon of Radford, Virginia and brother, Benjamin Mitchell of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and a host of nieces and nephews.
