- (Tallahassee Democrat)
WEST, Roy Daniel, 69, passed away at his home in Tallahassee early Wednesday morning surrounded by loved ones. Roy was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 26, 1939. His early childhood was spent in South Georgia before the family moved to Jacksonville in 1956. Roy was a submariner in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1960. Roy was stationed at the submarine base in Key West, Florida where he met his first wife, Darnella Carey. In 1961, Roy moved to Tallahassee and attended Florida State University. The same year, he founded Allweather Insulation Company, which he owned and operated until his retirement. Roy's love of bluegrass music led to the formation of the Big Bend Ramblers and the Miller's Landing Bluegrass Festivals. For over 30 years, the Big Bend Ramblers were instrumental in increasing popularity of bluegrass music locally. It was at a local bluegrass event that the then widowed Roy met his second wife, Phyllis Holland. When not working on any special project, Roy could be found in his "Garage Mahal" under the hood of one of his many classic automobiles. As a teenager he loved going to auto races on the beaches of Daytona, which fueled his lifetime passion for all things automotive. He belonged to many car related clubs, but his favorite was the Antique Automobile Club of America. Roy was a Seminole football season ticket holder and supporter for 30 plus years. Roy's first priority was always his family and remains his greatest legacy. He is survived by his wife Phyllis West; son, Todd D. West (Amy) of Omaha, NE; daughter, Karen Hahn (Phil) of Tallahassee; brother, Glen H. West of St. Augustine, Florida; sister, Ruth A. West of Jacksonville, FL; and grandchildren, Wade Hahn, Emily Hahn, Aubrey Hahn and Jordan West . Roy is preceded in death by his parents, Wade T. West and Leta Mae Hall; brothers, Kenneth W. West, Paul D. West, and Hugh T. West. Visitation is 5-7 p.m, Friday, January 30 at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, (850- 893-4177). A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m., Saturday, January 31 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1700 North Meridian in Tallahassee (850-385-5146). Memorial contributions may be made to: Big Bend Hospice of Tallahassee, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32309 (www.bigbendhospice.org).
