At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

HORNAMAN, F. Elwood, 83, Erie, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2009. Born in Venango Township on December 28, 1925, he was a son of the late Francis A. and Jeanette (Shroder) Hornaman. He attended Torry School, and graduated from Cambridge Springs High School in 1943. During WWII, he served with the submarine fleet as a Seaman with the U. S. Navy. From 1954 until his retirement in 1987, he was a customer engineer working on typewriters with IBM. He was a 50 year Mason and Past Master of the Cambridge Springs Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Rachel L. (Glenn) Hornaman, whom he married June 4, 1949; a daughter, Peg Muck (William), of Fairview; a son, David Hornaman (Kristal), of Erie; seven grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Thelma Mitchell, (Richard), of Niland, CA, and Patricia Wise, of Cambridge Springs. He was preceded in death by a brother, Neil Hornaman and a sister, Glenna Landers. Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brugger Home for Funerals, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Blvd. Services there Friday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Moelk of the Church of the Cross officiating. Masonic services Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. RIZZELLI, William D., 87, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at Bolton Manor Nursing Home of Marlborough, MA after a brief illness. He leaves his wife of 62 years, Rita M. (Fahey) Rizzelli; children, William D. Rizzelli II of Auburn, M. Frances Rizzelli and George Pacific of Marlborough, Doreen R. Cavanaugh of Marlborough and James T. Rizzelli (Sheri), of Marlborough. He also leaves four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Angelo Rizzelli, Leonard Rizzelli, Michael Rizzelli, Lewis Rizzelli, Marie Costello, Jennie Murry and Anne Winski. He was born in Marlborough, son of the late John and Vigentina (Santagata) Rizzelli, and had been a lifelong resident of Marlborough. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a machinists mate second class on the USS Gurnard, USS Tuna, USS Massachusetts and the USS Hammerhead. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the European Theatre of Operations Ribbon with Star, Submarine Combat Pin, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two stars, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He was an assembler and inspector for more than 35 years at the former General Motors of Framingham, until his retirement in 1982. After World War II, he joined the US Air Force Reserve and became a pilot. He was a life member of the D.A.V. Salvatore Padula Chapter 82 of Marlborough. He also was a member of the Italian American Veterans of War Post 45 of Marlborough and a member of the American Legion Akroyd Houde Post 132 of Marlborough. He also was a member of Silent Service, a national member of the US Sub Veterans of World War II and a member of the U.S.S. Massachusetts. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 30, at 10 a.m. at John P. Rowe Funeral Home Inc., 57 Main St., Marlborough. Burial with military honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Wilson Street, Marlborough. Calling hours at the funeral home are prior to the services, 9 to 10 a.m. Those who wish may make memorial contributions in his memory to D.A.V. - Salvatore Padula Chapter 82 of Marlborough, P.O. Box 229, 255 Main St., Marlborough.
