DUNSMORE, Donald, born in 1918, died on January 15, 2009, from Alzheimer's disease. He spent his last day with his family praying for him-we look forward to seeing him again in Heaven with Jesus. He grew up in Kentucky during the Depression which taught him the art of frugality. He wasted nothing throughout his life. He had his first car when he was 12. He worked for a farmer who paid him with apples; he would then haul them to town in his model T and sell them. He had a long illness in his teen years that kept him out of school, so he practiced and developed the most beautiful, precise handwriting akin to that on the U.S. Constitution. He served a full term in the Navy as a submariner before Pearl Harbor. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became a B-17 Pilot. He went from the lowest to the highest jobs in the military and retired happily as a Major in the U.S.A.F. He also retired after a long career at Pacific Telephone. He attended Scott Memorial Baptist Church and studied under Pastors Grimes and LaHaye. He was an avid diver for 20 years and kept a well-stocked freezer of abalone, fish, and lobster. He is credited for saving the lives of two drowning children off Bird Rock and received the Vail Award for this act of valor. He also stayed fit as a Black belt in Judo. He was adept at fixing anything with next to nothing. He and a close friend spent seven years building a mountain cabin by hand. Don is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, sons, Gary and Ron, four grandsons, and one great-grandson. His Memorial Service will be held at I p.m. on Monday, January 26th, at the El Camino Memorial Park in the Garden of Honor at 5600 Carroll Canyon Road. Reception immediately following the Service.

MADALINSKI, Arnold Joseph, 73, passed away peacefully Jan. 21, 2009. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Base as an electrician for 23 years. Born in Ottawa Lake, Mich., he was the son of the late Celia Cecile Gawrych Madalinski and Frank Madalinski. Mr. Madalinski served in the US Navy as a submariner for more than 20 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Norfolk and its Grace Bible Class. He also attended and spent many hours in the computer lab at the Virginia Beach campus of Tidewater Community College and was a staple of many of the Starbucks and Barnes & Noble book stores around the Tidewater area. Left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Felicia M. Daniels and her husband Chris of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Marianne Madalinski of Hampton; a son, David A. Madalinski of Norfolk; and their mother, Rachel A. Barfield of Norfolk; a sister, Joanne M. O'Rielly and her husband Clifford of Ann Arbor, Mich.; two brothers, Norbert Madalinski and his wife Ruth of Ottawa Lake, Mich., and Victor Madalinski and his wife Marilyn of Petersburg, Mich.; and two darling grandchildren, Avery and Jordan Daniels. A celebration of his life will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Teresa Holloway. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society. Online condolences may be offered to the family through www.hdoliver.com.
