COFFMAN, Orville Alfred, 88, died January 5, 2009, in Coos Bay. Al was born December 29, 1920, in Pendleton, to Orville William and Blanche Waddle Coffman. Al spent most of his life in Olympia, Wash., graduating from Olympia High School in 1939. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served for six years. He was a chief pharmacist mate on the submarine USS Finback (SS-230), the submarine that rescued George W. Bush Sr. in the South Pacific. On June 29, 1942, he married Margaret Jean LeDrew of Shelton, Wash. After being discharged from the Navy, he went back to school and received his bachelor's degree from St. Martin's College in Lacey, Wash. After graduation, he and Margaret moved to McMinnville and started a 30-plus year career with Champion International, having transferred to Eugene, and then finally to Roseburg, where he retired in 1983. Al loved all sports and was an avid fan of the Oregon Ducks, Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Mariners and the Portland Trailblazers. He was a life member of the Roseburg Elks Lodge No. 326 and the World War II submarine veterans. He never knew a stranger and will be greatly missed by all. Al is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret of Coos Bay; daughter, Pam Cardwell of Coos Bay; grandchildren, Dawn Curtis of Roseburg, Carrie Fromdahl of Winston, Sean Frank of Coos Bay and Kevin Frank of North Bend; great-grandchildren, Jake Coffman of Roseburg, Ben, Carsen and Emersen Fromdahl of Winston, Kaitlin and Jenna Frank of Coos Bay and Jayden and Adrianna Frank of North Bend; and twin brother, Art Coffman of Olympia. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Tim Coffman. A celebration of life will be held for Al Coffman, 88, of Coos Bay, formerly of Roseburg, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at the home of his granddaughter, Carrie Fromdahl, Safari Estates, 101 Sarah Bear Drive, Winston. Private family inurnment will be held at Roseburg National Cemetery in Roseburg, Saturday, Jan. 24. Cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens Crematory in Coos Bay. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Roseburg Elks Lodge No. 326, 749 S.E. Jackson St., Roseburg, OR 97470, or a charity of one's choice.
