STOIBER, Edward William "Ed", 82, of Hot Springs Village, Ark., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009. He was a devout Catholic and member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Ed was born April 12, 1926, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to the late Henry Stoiber and Anna Puerzer. He was a graduate of University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. A World War II Navy veteran/submarine division, he was assigned to the USS Lapon and awarded the Pacific Theatre Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon and Victory Medal Philippine Liberation. Ed retired from GTE in Fort Wayne, where he worked as a fleet and building manager after 25 years of service. He also owned and operated automotive businesses in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was a lifetime member of SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). A loving husband and devoted father, Ed was a gentle, compassionate man and friend to all. He was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, loved working on cars, gardening, biking, and helping others. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Patricia Halligan Stoiber of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; sons, Edwards F. Stoiber (Michelle) of Gurnee, Ill., David R. Stoiber (Marsha Meuller) of Scandinavia, Wis. and Eric W. Stoiber (Jana) of Little Rock, Ark.; daughters, Judi Emerson (Jeff) of Meridian, Miss., Patti Bailey (John) and Mary Jo Suski (Steve), both of Little Rock, Ark.; his grandchildren, Jacob Stoiber, Evan Stoiber (Bobbi), Nathan Stoiber, Ryan Stoiber, Anna Stoiber, Megan Stoiber, Sarah Stoiber, Rachael Bailey Oberste (Mrs. Daniel), Erik Bailey, Eddie Bailey, Rebecca Bailey, Conrad Emerson, Daryl Emerson, Steven Suski, Morgan Suski, and Brianna Suski; a brother, Harry Stoiber of Lakeland, Fla.; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Gabauer and Marian Horn. The family would like to extend a special thanks to St. Joseph's Nursing staff, 2nd floor East Wing for their compassionate and loving care to Ed during his hospital stay. A Celebration of his Life was held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 295 Balearic Road, Hot Springs Village, with Monsignor Bernard Malone and Deacon Larry Lipsmeyer officiating. Visitation was held at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, with a Rosary at 5:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Interment in Roselawn Cemetery, Little Rock, Ark. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials to St. Joseph Mercy Foundation or Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. SUMMITT, Charles Daniel, CAPT, USN Ret., 84, died January 1, 2009 in St. Petersburg, FL. Born in Nashville June 26, 1924, was the son of Charles O. and Dickson Summitt, A graduate of Montgomery Bell Academy, Capt. Summitt, attended Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech before graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1947. In 1958 Capt. Summitt invented and received a patent for a safer boatswain's chair which came to be known as the "Summitt Chair". July 21, 1962, nuclear powered submarine, USS Seadragon, based in the Pacific and commanded by Summitt, met the USS Skate, based in the Atlantic, under the polar ice cap and the two made history as they surfaced together through a hole in the ice cap. Capt. Summitt's last submarine command was the USS Alexander Hamilton, a Polaris submarine. He served as aide to Admiral Hyman Rickover (father of the nuclear navy) 1963-64. Summitt retired from the navy in 1974. In 2004, a book, Tales of a Cold War Submariner, by Dan Summitt was published by Texas A&M University. Survivors are his wife, June, of South Pasadena, FL; two sons, Charles Daniel Summitt, Jr. and wife Marie, New Orleans, LA; and Stephen Dickson Summitt, Franklin, TN; two grandchildren, Marie Louise Summitt, and Charles Daniel Summitt III, New Orleans, LA; step daughters, Cecelia Strange, and husband Michael Snider, and Sherry Ailing of South Pasadena, FL; step grandchildren, Jeffrey Strange and David Putnam of South Pasadena, FL. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. January 29, 2009 at Church of the Resurrection, Franklin, TN.


Sally Axene Departed on External Patrol on Thursday, January 8th, 2009. Sally is the widow of RADM Dean Axene who passed away on December 19th, 2008.
