At random: The first periscope used by the United States Navy was not built for a submarine. The ironclad monitor OSAGE utilized a periscope to discover a Confederate cavalry unit taking cover behind the high banks of the Red River in Arkansas.

Subject: Pacific NW Flooding

Been lots of flooding around here due to heavy rains and 25 inches of snow melt in the last 36 hours. We have over 20 rivers at flood stage or close to it. Twenty miles of Interstate-5 south of Olympia is closed due to flooding. All three major mountain passes are closed due to slides, both snow and mud. One of the more spectacular sights is Snoqualmie Falls. When viewing please remember these falls are twice as high Niagara Falls though not as wide.
