At random: “What wordy praise can one give such men as these; men who … follow unhesitatingly when in the vicinity of minefields so long as there is the possibility of targets … Men who flinch not with the fathometer ticking off two fathoms beneath the keel … Men who will fight to the last bullet and then start throwing the empty shell cases. These are submariners.” - Eugene Fluckey in his final war patrol report aboard USS Barb

- (Rapid City Journal)
ROMEL, Ralph, 80, of Rapid City passed away January 2, 2008 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. Ralph was born in Glen Robbins Ohio on February 3, 1928. He was a gifted baseball player and played on various teams in his youth, reaching the level of semi-pro before joining the Navy in 1945. Ralph served on a submarine in his initial deployment and was honorably discharged in 1947. He reenlisted in the Navy in August 1950 and served until June of 1954. It was during this second stint that he met his soul mate, Eurith, while on leave with a buddy from Wyoming. They were married in Yuma AZ March 15th, 1952. They were married only a short time before Ralph left for sea duty in Korea. Ralph was discharged in June of 1954. They moved to Rapid City in the fall of 1954. A few months later he interviewed for a civil service job at Ellsworth Air Force Base and was hired on the spot. His Civil Service career included various accounting and finance responsibilities, with the last several years of his almost 30 year career reaching the height of Deputy Accounting and Finance Officer. Ralph retired June 1st 1984. We rest assured he is in God's loving arms, in no more pain or discomfort. Ralph is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eurith, Daughter Karen Hansen (John) of Kalispell MT, son Terry (Cerise Jolliver) of Vancouver WA, granddaughter Heather Hansen-Munro (Thomas) of Albuquerque, NM, great-grandchildren Britton, Clara and Spencer of Albuquerque NM, sister Betty Bulger of Barton OH, brother Frank Romel of Bellaire OH, brother-in-laws Phil Whisler of Roseville CA and Bob Burlenski of Lafferty OH, and sister in-law Joan Miller of Laurel, MT. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Harriet, sisters Edith and Gertie, brothers Ed, Leroy, Billy and Chuck. Services will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, January 7th at the Rapid Valley United Methodist Church with the Reverend Bob Savot officiating. Burial will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park with full military honors provided by VFW Post 1273. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 6 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home. Memorials have been established to the American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society. Condolences may be conveyed to the family at www.behrenswilson.com.

I suspect that he passed on 2 Jan. 2009, instead of 2008.

Ralph Romel and his wife belonged to my church for many years. I didn't know he had been a submariner, or would have bent his ear a few dozen times.

Another of the greatest generation raises anchor on his last voyage.
