At random: In World War II the Germans lost 782 submarines, the Japanese lost 130, Great Britan and Commonwealth countries lost 88 subs, Russia lost 110 submarines and the United States lost only 52 submarines. Twenty-three of the Japanese subs lost were victims of the American Submarine Service.

PARK, Jr., Richard J., 66, was called by his Lord to come to his Heavenly home on Wednesday, December 31, 2008, after a lengthy illness. He graduated from Johnson City High School and Broome Community College. He served in the U.S. Navy from August 1962 to October 1970 serving aboard the submarine USS Corporal (SS-346) and the nuclear sub USS Casimir Pulaski (SSBN-633) as an Electronics Tech. He always felt proud and honored to have served his country. He retired from IBM and EIT where he enjoyed his work and was a very dedicated employee. He was a member of the US Submarine Veteran's, Inc. and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 2332. He is predeceased by his parents, Richard Sr. and Priscilla Park; his fraternal grandparents, Claude and Gertrude Park; and his maternal grandparents, Fred and Fern Cowan; and his dog, Fritz. Richard is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sandy Park, Johnson City; son, Chris (Jackie) Park, Greenville, NY; two grandsons, Jason and Adam Park; daughter, Dr. Tricia Park, Syracuse; sister, Candice (David) Springer. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Barber Memorial Home Inc., 428 Main St., Johnson City, with the Rev. Mary Jean Simonin, Pastor of the Apalachin United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Nichols Cemetery, Nichols, N.Y. The family will receive friends at the Barber Memorial Home Inc. on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Institute for Cancer Research, Dept. IHW1, 1759 R. Street NW, Washington, DC, 20009; or the Speak Animal Hospital, P.C., 351 Flint Road, Binghamton, N.Y. 13905.


CLOSE, John Paul, 62, died December 25, 2008. Born John Paul Busby in Portland, OR on January 5, 1946 to parents, John and Edna Marie (Hixson) Busby. When his mother remarried, he took the last name of his stepfather, Creston Close, and the family moved to Prineville, OR in 1952. He attended grade school in Prineville, OR and Ukiah, CA. and graduated from high school in Prineville, in 1964. He married Kathy Hammond (now Bannon) in Seattle, WA. John served in the US Navy as a cook aboard the USS Archerfish, USS Tiru, and USS Pickerel, conventional class submarines; and the USS Halibut, USS Sargo, both nuclear class submarines; and later the USS Enterprise, a nuclear aircraft carrier, where he completed two tours of Vietnam. He recently retired from Foss Shipping after 30+ years as a chef on tugboats from Puget Sound to Alaska. John loved to hunt and fish. He was a Life Member of the American Legion, the VFW, and the Vietnam Veterans of America; and a member of US Submarine Veterans, and the Eagles, Elks, and Moose Lodges in Prineville. He volunteered thousands of hours over the years, cooking, and helping other veterans. John is survived by his daughter, Lisa Close, of Lynnwood, WA; his son, Craig Close, of Seattle, WA; brothers: Ronald Close (Nena), of Bend; Lorin Close (Connie) of Prineville: sister, Kathleen Close of Springfield, OR; stepfather Creston Close (Bea) of Bend; uncle Paul Hixson of Vashon Island, WA; aunt Mary Alice Mooney of Boulder City, NV; and many friends, including his close friend, Norma Scott of Prineville. He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Marie Close; father, John Busby; and grandparents, Hewie and Nellie Hixson. No services will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to V.V.A. Chapter 820, PO Box 8523, Bend, OR 97708. 541-383-3930. Whispering Pines Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
