YORK, William "Bill", 81, of 2222 Five Mile Drive, died December 18, 2008, at the Boone County Hospital. Bill was born in Boone on August 20, 1927, the son of Steve and Mary (Nelson) York. He graduated from Boone High School in 1945. Bill served with the US Navy during WW II as a submarine Seaman First Class. On September 1, 1945, Bill married Frances Louise Weston in Boone. In earlier years, he served as an officer for the Boone Police Department. He later was employed as a Transportation Officer for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Bellevue, retiring at age 65, and moving back to Boone. Bill was a member of the V.F.W. #817, American Legion #56, and the Loyal Order of Moose #104. He enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi River, woodworking, walking his cat, and playing cards at the V.F.W. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Frances in November of 2007, and a brother, Dean York. He is survived by a daughter, Lynda Paris and husband Don of Boone; two sons, Bill York and wife Candy of Farragut, and Tony York and wife Jackie King of Ogden; five grandchildren: Dawn Vale and husband Scott, Sara York, Cody York and wife Patti, Derek York, and Allen York; and two great grandchildren. Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Tuesday morning from 8:00 a.m. until service time. His body has been cremated and a Memorial Service will be Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall with Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial of his cremains will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Central Iowa-Boone Office.
