This is a simple poem that I wrote to aswage the pain of loss at the time.  It's almost Christmas, and it's truly rough to deal with loss at a time like this.

For Solveig:

I spied a young sailor,
American I think,
He came in from the ocean,
aboard a long skinny boat.

He took a liking to me,
And I to him,
We had nothing in common,
Just an interest,
He in me and me in him,
and in his country.

I spoke the words,
To gain entrance,
They meant so much then,
Even more now,
And I have him,
Who has been there,
To guide me,
And I him,
In our journey of life.

So many years,
So many lessons,
The classroom of life I think,
Is never closed,
I love America and,
my husband.

I've been dealt cards,
from a challenging deck,
and these cards I have feared,
but fear no more,
for I have my Dex,
my family of underwater gentlemen,
and their ladies,
to comfort me.

Like the sea that surrounds it's fishes,
my submarine family is everpresent,
it constantly surrounds me,
and gives me the oxygen of friendship,
the very breath of life.

And I know it will NEVER exhaust itself.

I AM Nowegian,
I AM strong,
I AM American,
I AM loved,
I AM blessed...

I AM Solveig...

I encourage all that have lost loved ones to chime in on this thread to share a common loss and to pay a joyful tribute. In Seattle, it's snowing like never before... it's glorious... even Ric looks handsome backdropped with the snow! :"

Merry Christmas shipmates!!!

Ric---Handsome???????? Not a chance!!!!!
Good Poem, Don. I'm sure Dex will appreciate it. Wonder where that old rascal is? Haven't seen much of him lately. Maybe it's the weather.
My lovely and sweet-hearted Mother-in-law passed away this past December 17th. She was truly an amazing woman and had a heart of gold. She will be missed greatly by a lot of folks.

Dex's computer gave up the ghost a couple weeks ago. He's trying to get a friend to fix it for him. Do him a favor, print out the poem and snail-mail it to him. He would appreciate it.

For me, Don, the poem would begin:

"I was a young soldier",

and end:

"I am Swedish
I am Strong
I am American
I am loved
I am Blessed

I am Joseph"

Now I'm crying. He was only 53. He was my lover and partner. He was the father of my children; grandfather of my grandchildren (two of whom he never met); and the great-grandfather of my three great-grandchildren (none of whom he met), and the person that I was 'sposed to grow old with.

Life's not fair.

Cora

Solveig was a dear friend of mine and seemed to know when to I was in my cups (probably only Dex can understand that) she invariably would send me something that would cheer me up and bring on a smile and Dex has kept that memory alive to this day.

I also lost my wife to that same dreadful disease, and can feel Dex' pain. Although I have moved on somewhat quicker than Dex, the memories are still there.

DEX, I lift a CUP of cheer in toast to you and our departed loved ones, May you have a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

I didn't mean to slight everyone else on this BBS, I just didn't feel it appropriate in a tribute to a special friend and his wife.

SO, I DRINK A TOAST TO ALL THE SHIPMATES AND SHIPMISTRESSES (IF I'M ALLOWED TO CALL THEM THAT) SMOKEBOATERS AND NUKES ALIKE.

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A GLORIOUS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

I, too, thank our Shipmate for that fine poem. While it is specific to Dex and Solveig,
the sentiment applies to all of us who have lost loved ones recently.

This is the first Christmas without both my parents. The house feels empty without them -
even the usual creaks and groans of a 50-year-old house are muted.

We have been cycling between fog and freezing cold and rain for two weeks - dark and dismal,
Christmas lights and music not withstanding.

And yet, it IS Christmas - a time of hope, charity, life-affirmation, and renewal.

The yard is a foot deep in mulberry and walnut leaves, but the citrus trees are ever-green and
loaded with ripening oranges, lemons, and grapefruit.

The rain is a blessing, to recharge the groundwater and nourish the winter crops.

I am surrounded by caring family, friends, coworkers, and Shipmates and Ladies.

I have a roof over my head and food in the kitchen. I have money in the bank.
My dog greets me on the back porch, or from her pad next to the furnace in the garage.
My ailments are minor compared to others I know.

And when I feel most alone, God has someone call, or send an email to cheer me up.

I am blessed.

And so, in this most Blessed Season, I, too raise my glass:

To God, for all HE has given us

To all those who care about me, and whom I care about

To our Shipmates and Comrades on duty all over the world, who carry on where we left off

And to the Memory of our Departed Shipmates, Ladies, and Loved Ones, whom, God willing,
we will see again when our Final Orders come through.

Merry Christmas to all, and a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Don, this is truly beautiful...and as you many may remember, we lost our niece Lizzie this year...and she was truly a beautiful person.  Now, I have lost someone who is just as close.  I lost my dear godmother, the night before last.  We have been expecting it, but it is never easy to hear when the news does finally come.  She was older and lived a good life, but it will be hard not having her around...especially this time of the year.

Thank you for posting this wonderful piece, Don.

Yeah, I guess even Ric wouldn't look half bad in the snow...that's if you can find him!!!
(hehehehe)

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!

Condolences to you and the family, Patti. Here at my home we know the feeling. Sharon's Mother died on the 17th of this month. Kind of a somber Holiday.
