LUKER, James S., 82, of Evansville, Ind., formerly of Sarasota, died November 17, 2008. He was the first male president of Visiting Nurse Association of Southern Indiana, president of Indiana Gas Association, chairman of Indiana Electric, Indiana Tax Board, Kennel Club, Evansville Zoo Board, United Way Board, Meals on Wheels, Evansville City Beautiful, Keep Sarasota Beautiful, Rotary Club, Democratic Committee, Kiwanis, and board member of Thunder on the Ohio and Vanderburgh Airport Authority, and volunteer at Mote Marina in Sarasota. Born in Indianapolis, IN September 2, 1926, he was the Columbus Township assessor. James served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Services as torpedo man's Mate T Third Class at Mare Island at Hunter's Pointe. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Charlene (Everroad); daughter, Suzanne Thomas (Steve), brother, Howard E. Luker, of Sarasota; grandchildren Christopher Neal Thomas, and Nicholas James; and great-grandchild, Morgan James Thomas. James was preceded in death by his parents, Walter H. and Adelle (Newkirk) Luker, and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Luker of Sarasota.Funeral services will be in Evansville, Ind. Browning Funeral Home is in charge.

ACHEE, Emile Walton, 81, was called to Heaven on November 11, 2008. Emile was born on January 4, 1927 in Great Neck, NY. He attended Yale University for one year and was able to earn an appointment to the US Naval Academy. It was during his time at the Academy he would meet his life long love, Joan, and they would marry June 5th, 1949 shortly after Emile graduated and was commissioned as a naval officer. Emile and Joan would share almost 60 years together, and their love produced a family of six children. After graduation and completing amphibious training, Emile would serve with distinction in the Korean Conflict, and after later serving as an engineering officer in the submarine fleet, he finally left active duty in 1955. Although no longer on active duty, he would continue to serve in the naval reserves were he later attained the rank of Captain. Following active duty, Emile started his second career going into engineering and marketing assignments for companies such as Autonetics, Rockwell International, and finally Magnavox. Emile is survived by his wife, Joan; sons and daughters, Durand, Robert, Suzanne, Denise, Jon, and James; fifteen grandchildren, and five great- grandchildren. Emile's memorial service will be held at Riverside National Cemetery, with Military Honors on Monday, December 8th, 2008 at 2:15 p.m., Staging Area #4.

LEWIS, Sr., Bertram Howard, 80, of 18 Marilyn Road, Waterford, died Wednesday night, November 19, 2008, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. He was born April 23, 1928, in Newport, R.I., the son of George T. and Susan Lewis. He graduated from Rogers High School in 1947 and joined the Navy in September 1950. He served in the Submarine Service aboard many vessels and retied as torpedoman master chief on 1970. He is a veteran of the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. Mr. Lewis is a member of the Fleet Reserve Assoc., RAFA, VFW, Sub Vets, and the American Legion. Following retirement, Mr. Lewis worked at the Waterford Public Library as the building and grounds manager, retiring in 1993. He married the former Olive Fortini on Aug. 7, 1953, who died on Dec. 10, 2003. Together they raised seven children, Dorothy S. Lewis and her partner, Jen, Cameron C. Lewis and his wife, Margaret, of New London, Lorraine L. Lewis of Palm Springs, Calif., and Abigal Miller and her husband, James, of Waterford, Dominic A. Lewis and his life partner, James, of Palm Springs, Calif., and Jason C. Lewis and his wife, Audra, of Westport, Mass.; along with five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Bertram H. Lewis Jr. Bertram was baptized into membership of the Huntington St. Baptist Church in New London on April 6, 1958, where served as Sunday school teacher, AWANA Club director, chairman of the trustee board, Deacon, and also as a church clerk. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Huntington St. Baptist Church, New London. There are no visiting hours. Private burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Old Saybrook. Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London, is assisting with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Huntington St. Baptist Church, General Fund, 29 Huntington St., New London CT 06320.

RIP Bert Lewis.  I worked with Bert at the Waterford Library -- we never talked about past lives and until now I didn't know he was on the boats.  Very nice guy, liked by all.
