At random: The self-propelled torpedo, which gets its name from the eel TORPEDO ELECTRICUS, was invented by Robert Whitehead in 1868, a number of years before a practical submarine was developed.

Subject: PAC SUB ICEX 85 or 86 ?

Howdy, I'm hoping you can help me find someone involved in the USN ICEX
arctic exercises of the 1980's. I landed a USAF C-130 from
Elmendorf AFB, way up on the arctic (North pole) ice about 200m N of Pt.
Barrow. We resupplied the boat with some kind of scientific research torpedos. At
the time we were told we'd get a photo of our acft next to the sub, a
patch, etc. But you know how those things go. Time went by and I forgot
about it. Today I toured the Submarine Museum in St. Mary's, GA. and was
reminded of it. The museum curator told me the boat might have been the
USS Hawkbill. If you could help, I'd really appreciate it. Sincerely.

Jim, I wasn't there in your time frame, but I'll give you a start.
At the least you rate this patch, for going north of the Arctic Circle. It's available through SubmarineShop.com
You can contact the webmaster at the Hawkbill web site, and go from there.
If you click on 'Find a Shipmate' at the top of this page and then select   SSN(Fast Attacks) , you can search through Hawkbill crew that have registered at this site; years served aboard are listed for each person. A bit tedious, I know, but ...
Lastly you should realize that there were 3 boats involved in ICEX-86: Hawkbill (SSN-666), Ray (SSN-653), and Archerfish (SSN-678). You can Google each one, go to their web site ... unless you're sure it was Hawkbill, that is.
Could this photo have been taken from a C-130 cockpit?

Looks like the photo is too big for this site's server; copy the following URL into your browser address box: http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/05idx.htm , select Ray or Archerfish from the listing and scroll down to the photo that fits my description.
