- (The News & Advance)
DILLARD, William e (Bill), 85, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, November 15, 2008. Born on his mother's birthday, April 17, 1923, in Freeman, W.Va., he was a son of the late Roy Earl Dillard and Doris Amanda McMillian Dillard. Bill had an interesting and challenging life. He became the head of the family at just under 15 years old, upon the death of his father. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at age 16 and supported his mother and two minor siblings. He continued his family support when he later joined the US Navy in 1940, at age 17. While carrying supplies to what would later become allied countries, he actually saw combat prior to America's entering the war. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and war broke out in the Pacific, he almost Le immediately entered that fight. He was in combat almost the entire four years of the war. A ruptured appendix actually saved his life when the USS Gudgeon, the submarine on which he served, left on war patrol leaving him behind as an emergency patient. The submarine was lost and never to be heard from again. He later served on various battleships, including the Mississippi and the Wisconsin. He saw action in most of the major conflicts of the Pacific including the battles at Guadalcanal, the several battles of the Phillipines, Iwo Jima, and others. He left the Navy in 1948 and went to work in the steel erection business, where he learned the trade well. He continued to serve as a Sea Bee in the Naval Reserve, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. In retirement, he was the owner and operator of Timberlake Mobile Home Park, where he lived until the present day. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Lee Dillard, and three sisters, Katherine Dillard Naff, Audrey Dillard Klacynski and Mary Dillard Ragland. He leaves to cherish his memory four children, Ronan L. Dillard Sr. and wife, Carrie, of Knoxville, Md., Dr. Ladonna Bodipour and husband, Matt, of Houston, Texas, William L. Dillard Jr. and wife, Linda, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Jeffrey L. Dillard of Huntington,W.Va.; a brother, Roy M. Dillard and wife, Peggy, of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Bill had been in declining health the last several years and was under the loving care of his son, Ronan, during this time. There has never been a more caring and devoted son as Ronan has been to his dad. Bill will be missed. His younger brother will forever be grateful for his sacrifice for him personally and for his service to his country. He was not just a war hero to his country, but a hero to his brother as well. Bill's wishes were that he be cremated and his ashes be scattered in the same general area of his baby sister. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service by the Rev. Weldon Coker, with military honors rendered by American Legion Post 16. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Bill to KWVA Wounded Warrior Fund, P.O. Box 51, Lewes, DE 19958. Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory, 427 Graves Mill Road, (434) 239-2405, is in charge of arrangements. Memories and thoughts may be shared with the family at www.heritagefuneralandcremation.com.
