DeSILVA, Roger D., 60, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, while at his sister’s home in Conroe, Texas. Roger was born November 14, 1947, in Cooperstown, son of the late Donald and Beth (Hastings) DeSilva. Roger, a lifelong resident of Franklin, will be remembered by many as a true Franklin patriot. After graduation from Franklin Central School in 1966, Roger attended college at SUNY Morrisville, and then enlisted in the US Navy. Roger served proudly aboard the nuclear ballistic submarine USS Will Rogers (SSBN-659) as a torpedoman in the Gold Crew. Upon completion of his naval service, Roger returned to Franklin, where he married Jeanne Hitchcock on Dec. 16, 1972.Roger spent the rest of his life working as a plumber and furnace technician. Most recently, he was employed by Reinhardt Home Heating of West Oneonta. Roger was an active member of the Franklin Fire Department and EMS for over 35 years, and was vice chairman of the Franklin Treadwell Fire District. He was a member of Ouleout Valley Post 1689 American Legion in Franklin and a member of the Board of the Ouleout Valley Cemetery Association. As a proud member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Franklin, Roger served as warden of the Vestry, and was the church’s “Jack of All Trades.” Every hymn was his favorite. Roger is survived by his wife, Jeanne; and their four children, Joel and Jennifer DeSilva (children Avery and Ian) of Cedar Park, Texas, Donald and Maria DeSilva (daughter Alicia) of Franklin, Audra and David Mondore (children Willow and Dylan) of Sidney, and Kara and Jason Pardee (children Warren and Delia) of Franklin; sisters, Gwen DeSilva and her husband, Danny Dickens, of Liberty Hill, Texas, Gail Dewey (daughters Rachele, Sarah and Katie) of Conroe, Texas and Janet and Daniel Branigan (children Alton and Lara Leonard, Ryan and Erin Branigan) of Franklin; stepmother, Lettie DeSilva of Oneonta. Roger was preceded in death by his grandson, Mathew DeSilva; and brother-in-law, Alpha Dewey Jr.Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Main Street, Franklin, with the family in attendance.A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Franklin with Father Jim Shevlin as celebrant. A reception will follow for Roger’s many friends and relatives at the Franklin Fire Department in Franklin.Donations in Roger’s memory may be made to the Franklin Fire Department Building Fund, the Franklin EMS or St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Franklin. DUVALL, Thomas Reid, 76, went to be with the Lord November 9, 2008. Thomas was born in Michigan City, Ind., the son of the late Glenn and Dorethia Duvall. Mr. Duvall is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Elizabeth Perlick Duvall; his daughters, Susan Zegstroo and her husband Fred, Diana Carila and her husband Steve; and his son, Brian Duvall. Also surviving Thomas are his six grandchildren; his stepchildren, Michael Perlick and Karen Shields; and a stepgrandson. Mr. Duvall is also survived by his brother, John H. Duvall and his sisters, Nancy Johnston and Susan Seay, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Mr. Duvall was a member of the Green Acres Presbyterian Church, a member of the Churchland Lions Club and a veteran, serving his country proudly as a member of the US Navy. Soon after high school, Thomas enlisted in the Navy and did his basic training in San Diego, then afterwards participated in the NESEP Program at Purdue University, where he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Duvall then went on to serve in the submarine services and served on such vessels as the USS Argonaut, the USS Grenadier and the USS Nathaniel Greene. Lt. Cmdr. Duvall ended his naval career as the commanding officer of the Navy's Guided Missile School at Dam Neck, Va. After retiring from the Navy, Mr. Duvall had a second career teaching math and physics for 25 years in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. Special thanks to Dr. Martin Harpen and his staff of Portsmouth Nephrology and Heartland Hospice for their kind care. A memorial service to celebrate Thomas' life will be held Friday at Green Acres Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Walter Hunting officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Green Acres Presbyterian Church, 3135 Hanley Ave., Portsmouth.
