I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

MOOREHEAD .. .. .. SCPO Luther Westley Moorehead (USN, Retired), born in San Angelo, Texas on 10 August 1928 to J.M. and Ola White Moorehead, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2024. He and his beloved wife, Marilyn Downing, were wed on 23 April 2014.
Luther attended San Angelo Senior High School then enlisted in the US Navy and served 22 years, retiring as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. His service includes World War Two, Korean War, the Cuban Crisis, and Viet Nam.
After naval service, Luther worked for the US Postal Service for 18 years, retiring as Post Master, Winterhaven, California. Most recently, Luther and Marilyn have been attending Dotsonville Baptist Church and previously at the New Providence Cumberland Presbyterian church.
He was a Master Mason, 32nd degree Scottish Rite. Military awards include the World War Victory Medal, Korean service Medal, Philippine Independence, China Service, Good Conduct Medal w/ 4 Bronze Stars, National Defense w/1 Bronze Star, Naval Occupation for Europe and Asia, Navy Unit Commendation, Viet Nam Service Medal w/ 1 Bronze Star, Viet Nam Campaign Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Armed Services Expeditionary Medal w/1 Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, and the Submarine Dolphin Pin.
Luther was recently preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Downing. He was also predeceased by his parents J.M. and Ola White Moorehead, brother Dorris Moorehead, sister Dorothy Darling, and his son, Steve Downing.
He is survived by sons, David Moorehead, Westley Moorehead, John R. Downing (Lisa), Cynthia Wilson (George), and Keri Lynn Barnes (Stan), and seven grandchildren.
Visitation with the family will be from 9 a.m. until the hour of service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, 4 May 2024 at the Chapel of McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home. Rev. Tim Ferrell will officiate. US Navy Honors will be rendered and his remains will be scattered at sea by the US Navy at a later date.


COCHRAN .. .. .. On February 23rd, Richard J Cochran Jr. passed away surrounded by family in North Carolina. He was born on July 20th, 1942. Richard was predeceased by his mother Eva and father Richard Cochran Sr, siblings Harold Cochran, Cynthia Cochran Harris, and Jacqueline Cochran. His greatest joy was spending time with grandchildren: Mira and Cyrus and sharing stories about trains and time in the Navy. As he was the 1st African American from Illinois, Indiana, or Michigan selected for training as a submarine nuclear operator. Richard is survived by his son John Cochran, daughter Robyn Cochran Johnson (Darius), ex-wife Patricia Cochran, sister Carol Mack, and nephew Charles Harris. Visitation (2:30 pm) and funeral services (3:30 pm) on Saturday March 9th at A.E. Grier & Sons Funeral Services Charlotte NC. Officiated by Rev. Chad Armstrong. Interment on Monday March 11th at 12 pm York Memorial Park Cemetery, Charlotte NC.
