At random: Habitability is heavily stressed in the construction of modern submarines. Specially designed color schemes, mechanical conveniences, air conditioning, and the best chow in the Navy are supplied to make the vessels more livable. A full time staff is maintained by Electric Boat Division to work out 'human engineering' problems.

The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

PALMER .. .. ..Floresville - Melvin Earle Palmer 86, died March 19, 2024, at the Frank Tejeda Veterans Home in Floresville, following a long decline into dementia. He was born in Savannah, Georgia, the oldest child of Melvin Earle (Duke) Palmer and Mary Elizabeth McMillan. During the early years of WWII, he lived in Red Springs, North Carolina, with an extended family of grandparents, aunts and uncles and, as the only grandchild, was much loved and doted upon. After the war, in 1946, he moved with his parents and younger siblings to Brownsville.

Earle was gifted with many talents, including music (guitar), art, languages, and the ability to diagnose and repair almost anything mechanical. He was full of energy and had a vibrant, outgoing personality, and when he entered a room he became the center of attention. He joined the Navy when he was barely 17 and spent several years in the submarine service, including time on the USS Sargo, the second nuclear sub to reach the North Pole. He was the ship photographer, and his photos of the Sargo emerging from the ice were wired to newspapers around the world. He completed his stint in the Navy as an attache to the US Embassy in Rio de Janeiro, part of the US Naval Mission to Brazil.

After his stint in the Navy, he returned to Brownsville in 1964 where he worked at Levi Strauss, Duro Paper Bags and Leece-Neville before starting his own business, Olmito Electric Company.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Gayle Anderson Palmer, who died in 2006; his first wife, Bertha Williams; an infant child, Mignon Palmer; and by his brother, George Palmer, who died in 2006 of ALS. He is survived by two daughters, Catherine Snow and Mary Elizabeth Verssen, both of whom were born and raised in Brazil and are currently living in Florida; grandchildren Alana Snow and Stephen Snow of Cambridge, England; granddaughters Martha and Nichole Verssen, of Florida; a sister, Catherine (Kitty) Palmer of Highland Haven, Texas; sister-in-law Karen Palmer of Wimberley; and nephew Jon-Erik Palmer and niece Doria Vaughn, and great nephews Eli and Timothy Whetstone, all of Bastrop.

There will be no public services. The family wishes to express its deep gratitude to the staff members of both the Frank Tejeda and Alberto Gonzales Veterans Homes, who provided loving care during the final years of his life.
BARRY .. .. .. David Barry, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and United States Navy Veteran, passed away on March 17, 2024, at Vassar Brothers Hospital at the age of 75. Born on December 10, 1948, in Poughkeepsie, New York, David was the beloved son of George and Martha Barry. David dedicated his life to serving his community, first as a police officer in Wappinger Falls, NY, and later as a truck driver. His proudest moments were marrying his best friend, Mary Ann, in 1972, and embracing a devout Catholic faith. During the Vietnam War, David courageously served in the Navy aboard a nuclear submarine. He found joy in road trips, with a special fondness for Mystic Seaport in Connecticut and the submarine museum in New London. David is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann, their sons Brian and daughter-in-law Jessica of Pleasant Valley, and Scott of Pleasant Valley, his brother Donald of South Carolina, sister Gail of Wappinger Falls, and his cherished grandchildren Emma, and Gavin. He was predeceased by his son David, father George, mother Martha, and brothers Frank, Jeff, and Robert. A funeral service honoring David's life will be held at Holy Trinity Church on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 10:00 am, followed by burial at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery with Military Honors. David will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of love, dedication, and faith will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
