I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

McNELLY .. ... ...Kenneth Wayne McNelly, 84, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, died February 20, 2024. Born July 12, 1939, he was raised in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In 1961, he met his future wife, Norma Jean Keller. They married in 1963 and settled in the Tidewater area.
Ken served 20 years as a Naval Submarine Sonar Technician. The highlight of his Naval career was serving as an Acoustic Intelligence (ACINT) Rider, an elite group that supported special operation missions. A recognized expert in acoustic intelligence, Ken served numerous tours on fast attack submarines. After Naval retirement as Senior Chief, he spent 27 years in the sonar defense industry.
Ken lived life joyfully and with gusto. He filled the room with his energy and booming voice, always ready to share jokes, stories and wisdom with everyone he met. His passions included barbequing, fishing, model railroading, and all-things Pittsburgh! As a volunteer for the Coastal Conservation Association, he organized children’s fishing tournaments. A dedicated member of the Atlantic Coast S-Gaugers Model Railroading Club, he created and operated model train displays that delighted kids of all ages. However, his greatest passion and love was his family, especially his grandchildren. He will always be their beloved Pap.
Ken is predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Danice McNelly, and Adeline and Paul Ford; and brother, Major Gerald McNelly, USAF. He is survived by his wife of 61 years,
Norma; their children: Tim (Kathy), Nancy (Brian), Susan (Mark); grandchildren: Brianna, Olivia, Jacob, Kane, Cole, Ian and Lily; and sister-in-law, Hazel Reynolds (George). Ken is also survived by great friends in his model railroading club and treasured neighbors, Lenny and Earl.
A funeral service will be held at Thalia United Methodist Church (4321 Virginia Beach Blvd.) March 16, 2024 at 1:00 PM with internment at the church’s columbarium


CURTIS .. .. .. Larry Arthur Curtis, age 83, of Ovid died on Monday March 11, 2024, after a short battle with leukemia.
Larry was born on January 12, 1941, to Arthur and Neva (Moore) Curtis at home in Victor township. He attended Ovid High School where he earned his High School diploma. Shortly after graduating he proudly served his country in the United Sates Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis aboard the submarine USS Chivo. Later on, Larry worked at Sealed Power in St. Johns where he retired in 1995. On September 19, 1964, Larry married the love of his life, Judy Rhody. Together they raised their three wonderful children and enjoyed over 50 years of marriage.
During his life Larry enjoyed many days in the field hunting as well as many days on the water fishing with his family and friends. He loved to travel and go camping in his fifth wheel. Oftentimes you could find Larry enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning with his friends at the Ovid Cafe. Some of his most cherished times came when he was around the bonfire with his beloved family.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Loren (Jodi) Curtis of Bay City, Roxanne (Grant) LeDuke of Ovid, and Bryan (Michelle) Curtis of St. Johns; grandchildren Rachel (Jake) Kramer, Mitchell LeDuke, Tyler Curtis, and Katelyn Curtis; sister, Beverly Crowell; brother-in-law John Coffman; sisters-in-law Marilyn Curtis and Pam (John) Pfeifauf.
Along with his wife he is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Lorna Coffman, Robert Curtis, and Rosemary Stevens.
A memorial visitation will be held at McGeehan Funeral Home, Keck-Coleman Chapel on Friday March 15, 2024, from 4:00pm - 8:00pm. A memorial service will be held on Saturday March 16, at 11:00 with an hour of gathering before the service at McGeehan Funeral Home, Keck-Coleman Chapel, 1500 Waterford Parkway, St Johns, MI 48879

SCHAFFER .. .. ... Stanley W. Schaffer, Jr., 84, of Upper Milford Township, PA, passed away on March 9, 2024 at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest. He was the husband of Barbara A. (Shaffer) Schaffer and they observed their 62nd wedding anniversary last August. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Stanley W., Sr. and Arlene H. (Bramich) Schaffer. Stanley graduated from Allentown High School and Kutztown University. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service and also in the U.S. Marines.
Survivors: Wife; Sons, Stanley W. Schaffer, III of Emmaus and Christopher K. Schaffer of Macungie; Daughter, Colleen A. Schaffer of Allentown and her husband, Cristian Diaz; Brothers, Lamont C. Schaffer of Walnutport, Mark F.J. Schaffer of Tampa, FL, and Glenn A. Schaffer of Montana; Sister, Gail Schaffer of Richmond, VA; 9 Grandchildren and 7 Great-Grandchildren. Stanley was predeceased by his brother, Lewis M. Schaffer, and his sister, Linda Minnich.
Services: Memorial 2 PM Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, 225 Elm Street, Emmaus, PA. A calling hour will be held from 1-2 PM Wednesday in the funeral home. www.BKRFH.com

CRAFA .. .. ... John D. Crafa, 76 of Plainfield Township, Nazareth, PA passed away Sunday, March 3rd at Lehigh Valley Hospital Inpatient Hospice, Allentown, PA. 
John was born in Easton, PA on October 28, 1947, a son of the late Daniel J. and Rose (Meckler) Crafa. 

He was the husband of Debbie (VanHorn) Crafa. They celebrated their 35 wedding anniversary last May. John was a 1966 graduate of Bangor High School. He was employed as an Instrumentation Control Technician at PP&L, Martins Creek, for 39 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War as a 1st Class torpedo man on the USS Sea Robin 407. 

In his younger years, John enjoyed hunting, fishing, and running and had a true love and ownership of many muscle cars and motorcycles. A skilled Jack of all Trades, he enjoyed exercise, working on home improvements, and gardening. John also had a love of trees in which he planted many. He had a very artistic eye and enjoyed painting and woodworking. He also had a love for all his many pets, one special dog named Cayne. John was a member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Pen Argyl, PA. 

In addition to his wife Debbie, John is survived by a step-son, Timothy L. VanHorn, wife Tonya, A sister Kathy A. Fox, husband Dennis, brother Daniel J. Crafa, wife Sherry. A step-grandson Tyler L. Van Horn, three nephews David Hendershot, Bruce, and Daniel Crafa, and three nieces Lisa Bosga, Kim Armitage, and Mackenzie Crafa. 
He was predeceased by Step-daughter Jennifer VanHorn, and two brothers Ronald J. and Bruce "Red" Crafa. 

Friends and family are invited for visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 on Saturday, March 9th at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church, 300 W. Babbitt Avenue, Pen Argyl, PA, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM. Burial will be held at Forks Twp. Cemetery, Forks Twp., PA.
