At random: The first Japanese prisoner of war captured by the Americans was Kazuo Sakamaki, an ensign in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He was captured on the morning of December 7, 1941. Sakamaki had set an explosive charge to destroy his disabled submarine, which had been trapped on Waimanalo Beach. When the explosives failed to go off, he swam to the bottom of the submarine to investigate the cause of the failure and became unconscious due to a lack of oxygen. Sakamaki was found by a Hawaiian soldier, David Akui, and was taken into military custody. When he awoke, he found himself in a hospital under American armed guard. After the war he returned to Japan and found work with the Toyota Motor Corporation before retiring in 1987. Sakamaki died on November 29, 1999, aged 81.

The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

From the Groton USSVI base:
KING .. .. .. We recently learned from National on the passing of Master Chief Jerry King from Atequiza, Jalisco Mexico on 8 February 2024. His obituary is here https://erldc.org/obituary/jerry-alan-al-king-obituary/
Al King joined the Navy in 1955 from Southern Indiana. He was a High School Dropout after 10.5 years. Both his father and grandfather were Marines and his grandfather brought him to the Marine Recruiter on his 17th Birthday. Fortunately the recruiter was out that day and had gone fishing. 3 days later he was on his way to Boot Camp in Great Lakes.
He volunteered for Submarine Duty but was turned down because he didn’t have his High School Diploma. So he served for 5 years on a Destroyer making second class, becoming the leading TM and getting his GED diploma along the way. His first Submarine was USS ARGONAUT (SS 475) where he completed his Submarine Qualifications in 1962. He also served aboard USS HENRY CLAY (SSBN 625 ); Recruiting Duty; USS WILL ROGERS (SSBN 659) which included three months as the COB; and 1st LT on USS THOMAS A EDISON (SSBN 610); Polaris Test and Evaluation Program at Dam Neck VA then as COB USS SAM HOUSTON (SSBN 609); and COB of USS ATLANTA (SSN 712). Jerry A. King retired from the U.S. Navy as the SUBASE Pearl Harbor Weapons Department Leading Chief in 1987 as a TMCM(SS) with 32 years of service.
Mr. King joined USSVI in 2007 as a Regular member. He was inducted into the prestigious Holland Club in 2012.
