Last night at dinner my wife and I were reminiscing about my time on the FDR when we were in Brklyn navy yards in the summer/fall of 1960. We used to go down to 42nd st. walk around and wind up at TADS restaurant and have a steak dinner for the magnificent sum of $1.20 with a baked potato and a salad. We used to go their about 2-3 times a week....
Do any of you guys whom may have been stationed near NYC or lived there remember TADS?

She would pay since she made a hell of a lot more money then I did...which of course she reminded me of.

When they first opened we had reservations (yes required for their opening night). We stood outside in a line for about 1-1/2 hours. Everyone getting pissed because the reservations were a joke. We finally got in around 9:30pm. Big problem created by the restaurant folks. because al the griping outside they came out with free drinks. Need I explain? It was quite the novelty for awhile. Good steak dinner though. I don't think it lasted very long.

The last one in New York City closed Sunday, January 5th 2020, after 60 years in business. It was located at 761 7th Ave.,

That's interesting Paul. I bet a dinner wasn't $1.20 when they closed?

I remember eating at one on a weekend liberty from Sub School. I was supposed to meet up with a colleague of my father but that didn’t work out. So, I ate at Tads and took the train back. As I remember it was pretty tasty

If it was, explains a lot as to the reason for closing.

Didn't make it to NYC until '77.  I had been in Rochester for four days and loved it.  The peole there warned me that Rochester was nothing like Manhattan.  I was scare shi-lessas I explored the big city - they had told me don't make eye contact with people, and don't always be looking up at skyscrapers or else the crooks will know you area tourist .  No TADS because I could have used one.  My lasting memory of the bar/dining scene was Manhattan was the first place I had ever been where the bartender chilled my beer glass in ice before pouring my beer.

Went back many times and love it, but I could only handle the atmosphere for three days max before I headed north to Boston, or south to the Carolinas and a more relaxing pace.

"Upstaters" suffer from inferiority complexes.

I was born/raised there, and also across the River in NJ.

Now I ARE one myself.
