I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

HARTZELL .. .. ..East Lyme- Commander Steven S. Hartzell, a 34 year veteran of the United States Navy, passed away peacefully in Niantic, CT on February 12, 2024.
Commander Hartzell, a native of Audubon, PA, dedicated his life to serving his country. After graduating from Methacton High School in Fairview Village, PA, he enlisted and volunteered for service aboard submarines. He obtained the initial qualifications of "Qualified Enlisted Submarines" while serving on the USS Groton (SSN 694), followed by tours aboard the USS Casimir Pulaski (SSN 633) and Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 709). In September 1987, he was commissioned as a Limited Duty Officer.
During his naval career, Commander Hartzell served on various assignments, also including the USS Emory S. Land (AS 39), where he completed around-the-world cruises, and as the Services Officer aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) for multiple deployments. His shore assignments included Naval Sub Base New London Galley, Supply Waterfront Instructor at NAVSUP headquarters, and retiring as the NSB-NLON Supply Officer. He also earned his Gold Dolphins Supply Corps aboard the USS Springfield (SSN 761) during the 1990's, completing numerous underways and deployments.
In his leisure time, Commander Hartzell enjoyed gardening, landscaping, and golfing. He was a member of the Tuesday night men's league in Norwich, where he cherished the sportsmanship and camaraderie. He also had a passion for NASCAR, attending many races to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of high-powered cars.
Commander Hartzell was predeceased by his father, Marvin, step-father Richard Rogers, and his loving wife of 33 years, Laura.
He is survived by his mother, Roberta Rogers, his sons, Steven J. Hartzell, and Commander Michael S. Hartzell, daughter-in-law Amanda, and three wonderful and talented grandchildren, Tyler, Evelyn, and Eliana. He is also survived by his sister, Sandy, and husband John Hanlon, residing in Harleysville, PA, and his brother, Tim, and wife Pat Hartzell, residing in Merchantville, NJ, along with many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St, Niantic on Tuesday, February 27 from 6-8pm. Interment with military honors will be held at Monument Cemetery, 812 Bridgeboro Rd, Edgewater Park, NJ on Monday, March 4 at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Commander Hartzell can be made to the Subvets Post Groton or The Dale Jr. Foundation.



HRESHKO .. .. ..John William Hreshko (Pop), 92, a 44-year resident of , passed at his home on February 2, 2024 (Ground Hog Day). As he referred to every day since losing the love of his life, Donna in 2022.
He was born to the late Daniel and Catherine (Yurinko) Hreshko in Frackville, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his 3 siblings, Marie (Hreshko) Mellon, Daniel Hreshko, and Ted Hreshko, his only son John W Hreshko Jr and his loving wife of 61 years, Donna V Hreshko.
Pop is survived by his daughter Dana Marie Ward (Nelson), 4 grandchildren, Kelsie Bowen (William), Jonathan Ward (Kelsey), Blaine Ward (girlfriend Brooke), and Rachel Hreshko. He is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren, Jackson Ward, Everleigh Bowen, Ryder Ward, Lincoln Bowen, and Scarlett Ward and several nieces, nephews and brother and sister-in-laws.
Pop was the patriarch of the family, a proud Navy Veteran. He loved reminiscing about his days on the submarines and loved his days stationed in Key West. After his retirement from the Navy, he migrated to the Eastern Shore to continue his love of the water and fondness of the sea.
A true family man who loved spending time with his crew and never let any of them go hungry. An award-winning poet, accomplished chef and an all-around amazing human. His wit and sense of humor will be missed by friends, family, and neighbors.
Be free and fly with the gulls until we meet once again.
Pop wishes were for a private family celebration of life be held in his honor as opposed to traditional funeral services. Details for friends and family will be provided at a later date. Letters of condolence may be sent to the family via www.burbagefuneralhome.com. Arrangements are in the care of The Burbage Funeral Home.

MOORE.. .. ...Walker DuPree Moore, a man of exceptional intelligence and dedication, passed away on February 9, 2024, in Mineral Bluff, Georgia.
Born on June 7, 1946, Walker's life was one marked by achievement and service. His early life was filled with academic and extracurricular accomplishments, culminating in his graduation from Dublin High School in 1964 as a Star Student and band captain. His industrious nature was evident in his youth when he managed not one but three paper routes, including the Courier Herald. This early work ethic set the stage for a life characterized by diligence and a strong sense of responsibility.
Walker's thirst for knowledge and commitment to excellence continued at the US Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1968, ready to serve his country with distinction. Before his distinguished military service,
His naval career was nothing short of remarkable. As a weapons officer on the Nuclear Submarine USS Daniel Boone, Walker demonstrated his prowess and leadership. His peers and superiors recognized his talents, and he graduated first in his nuclear power class, a testament to his unwavering dedication and intellect.
He is survived by his brother, George Harold Moore (Dr. Margery McCrum) of Brattleboro, VT, and his sister, Melanie E. Moore of Dublin, GA. He joins in eternal rest his late father, William Walker Moore, his mother, Elizabeth DuPree Moore, and his son, Greg Moore, who all preceded him in death.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Mr. Moore will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. Dr. Darrell Paulk will officiate.

Coyote, I think Pig subscribed to a newspaper clipping service, but don't know for sure. I remember seeing a post of his that came out of the local rag here, but no mention of USSVI or USSVWWII.
