At random: John Philip Holland built several submarines before the USS Holland, which became the first undersea craft commissioned by the U.S. Navy. The Holland was purchased on April 11, 1900 for a price of $150,000. It was commissioned into the US Navy on October 12, 1900.

WALMER .. .. ..Chicopee, MA — It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Keith Alan Walmer, a respected Cold War Submarine Veteran, on January 25, 2024. At 62 years of age, Keith’s life was a beacon of dedication and love, touching everyone who knew him.
Born in Springfield, MA, Keith was the beloved son of the late John Walmer and Elizabeth Campbell. His legacy is carried on by his fiancé Lisa Hill, his daughters Melissa Kerby and Ashley Walmer, his grandchildren Grayson and Caroline, and Lisa’s children Austin and Madison Hill.
Following his military service, Keith moved to Gainesville, FL, where he developed a deep affection for the Florida Gators. His professional journey led him back to Chicopee, MA, where he dedicated himself to his work as a plumber and for the Springfield DPW.
Keith’s involvement in the 28th Masonic District as the Past Master of the Brigham Lodge in Ludlow, MA, was a significant part of his life. He cherished the time spent with his brothers and those he served, exemplifying a spirit of community and brotherhood.
Keith’s departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him. His love for his family, his dedication to service, and his commitment to his community will be dearly missed.
His life was a testament to the values he held dear: service, family, and community. Keith Walmer’s memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we bid farewell to Keith Alan Walmer, we remember his contributions, his love, and his enduring spirit. “Sailor, rest your oars,” for your journey has been noble and your legacy everlasting.
Keith’s story is not just one of loss but also of profound impact and everlasting memories shared by those whose lives he touched.


MARSHALL ......James Allen Marshall AIKEN, SC - Captain James Allen "Al" Marshall US Navy (RET.), 83, of Aiken, SC, passed away on February 7, 2024. He was born in Annapolis, MD, the son of the late CDR James Gilbert Marshall and Mary Emma Allen Marshall. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1962. He entered the Submarine Force, serving on six nuclear submarines, two of which he commanded - USS Shark (SSN591) and Commissioning CO of USS San Francisco (SSN711). He had of tour of duty at BUPERS and was on 7th Fleet Staff Yokosuka, Japan. He was CO of Submarine Base Pearl Harbor and finished his 30-year career as Chief of Staff at COMOPTEVFOR in Norfolk, VA. While there he received a Master of Science degree in Education from Old Dominion University. After retirement, he worked at Savannah River Site for several years. He was also involved with tennis officiating and was a past president of USTA-SC. He was also past president of MOAA. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phoebe; his son, James Marshall (Andrea); his daughter, Lee Heath (Greg); his sister, Mary Lee Sprague (Herb); grandsons, James and Shannon Marshall, Owen Heath; granddaughters, Lydia and Evelyn Heath; step-grandsons, Andrew, Alexander, and Asher Turpin. MASTER .... .... CDR Carl Lyman Master, Jr. USN Ret. passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Saturday, January 27th. He was born in Franklin, PA, June 2nd, 1931, to Carl L. & Elizabeth M. Master and raised in Oil City, PA, along with his siblings Elizabeth, Mary, and John. Carl had an enjoyable childhood, playing varsity football and wrestling for Oil City HS. His great passion was flying. Working summers and afternoons after school mowing runways and cleaning up at Splane Memorial Airport, Carl became a fully licensed pilot at 16. After graduation, he went to The Hill School, and after a year, he entered the United States Naval Academy, graduating with the class of 1954. Carl served in many deployments on various submarines, surface ships, and ashore, including a year in Saigon, retiring from the Navy in 1977. Carl then began his second career as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch, retiring in 1998. After retirement, Carl and Carolyn traveled extensively, including the Holy Land, Alaska, Russia, Europe, and the southwest United States.
Carl married Carolyn Mandell on November 30th, 1963, after a courtship in New London, CT, where, coincidentally, both the US Navy Submarine School and Connecticut College for Women were located. They were married for over 60 years, and after many duty stations, they settled in Virginia Beach in 1974. In 1988 they built their dream house on the Lynnhaven River and have lived there happily ever since. They supported The Virginia Symphony, The Norfolk Botanical Gardens, The Chautauqua Institution, Chrysler Museum and other organizations. Carl was a member of the Norfolk Rotary Club for many years. They have been St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church members for 50 years, serving on the vestry and various committees. Over the years, they have made many dear friendships from their time in the Navy, Virginia Beach life, retirement, and their many travels. These friendships are deeply cherished, and the love and support they provide have been a great comfort.
Above all, Carl loved his family and is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Carolyn; their son Carl W. Master (Helen), daughter Kristin Master, grandchildren Kathryn Grau (Geoff), Mark M. Slacin, and Aidan R. Master; Thomas Spencer, an invaluable friend and devoted caregiver; nephews and nieces Richard Hubbard, Mary Jane Sullivan, Catherine Eisenberg, Barbara Frederick, Lynn Clark, Monica Ringer, Max Ringer, and their spouses and children. 
He was known as a true gentleman and will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church 3201 Edinburgh Dr., Virginia Beach, VA 23452, on February 17th at 2 pm with a reception to follow. Memorials may be sent to St. Aidan’s.

SEGEE .. .. ...Donald K. Segee, 93, of Simsbury, CT, died peacefully on Friday, January 26, 2024. Born and raised in Essex, CT, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Marion (Burnham) Segee. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years Nancy (Prann) Segee. 
A Navy veteran, he served two years aboard the battleship USS Wisconsin BB-64 and two years aboard the submarine USS Trigger SS-564. Shortly after leaving the service he began working for Van Zelm Heywood and Shadford Engineers, retiring after 40 years. Over the years he was a member of the Simsbury Farms Men’s Golf League, the Farmington Valley Square Dance Club, Family Motor Coach Association and for many years the Assistant Scout Master for BSA Troop 171. While Simsbury was home for 63 years, he and Nancy enjoyed 20 years with family and friends at their cottage on Cape Cod. Upon retiring they enjoyed winters at their home in Titusville, FL and great adventures on the road traveling back and forth across the United States and Canada in their RV visiting all (including Alaska) but 7 states. 
What was most important to him and brought him the most joy was time with family and friends. He is survived by his three children, Paula Scott and husband Daniel of Monroe, Daniel Segee of Granby, and Bob Segee and wife Kelly of Bloomfield; his two grandsons Andrew Scott and Benjamin Segee; his sister Ruth Sturke and three nieces, whom he adored, Sandra, Sally and Susan and their families.

BERGER .. ... ..age 80. Bob passed away peacefully on Feb. 6. He was the eldest son of the late Robert Sr. & Sophie Berger (nee Jablonski). Bob is survived by son Robert Berger III and grandchildren Alexis Chambers and Kyron Connors. He also leaves his former spouse Brenda Nicola and step children Gina Sperrazza and Troy Kern. He was a brother to Patricia Kral, Ellen Wertz and Kevin Berger. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He served in the US Navy from 1964-1966 on a Naval Submarine.

ZALESKI .. .. .Francis E. Zaleski, 83, a lifetime resident of Glen Lyon, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Glen Lyon on Sept. 17, 1940, the son of the late John and Beatrice Filipski Zaleski.
He was a member of the graduating class of 1958 of Newport Twp. High School. Francis was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1961 on the submarine USS Cavalla. He went on to further his education and achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in education with a minor in English and French from King’s College in 1967.
He was employed by Greater Nanticoke Area School District as a teacher until his retirement in 1996. After his retirement, he enjoyed working for Wilkes University as a shuttle bus driver.
He was a member of the PSEA; NEA; American Legion Post 539, Glen Lyon; and the American Motorcycle Association. He was active in the Newport Twp. Community Organization (NTCO) where he served as its former treasurer. Together with his wife, Mary Lou, he served as a coordinator for Marriage Encounter for the Scranton Diocese for over 10 years, where he and Mary Lou met many lifelong friends. Francis loved the art of woodworking and carpentry for which he had an amazing talent. He enjoyed motorcycling, traveling and spending time with friends and family.
Preceding him in death were his brothers, John, William and Joseph Zaleski.
Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Lou Butkoski Zaleski, at home; daughter, Aimee Zaleski and her wife, Alisa DiSalvo, Appleton, Wis.; son, Peter Zaleski and his wife, Deborah, Glen Lyon; grandson, Christian Zaleski; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday from George A Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 211 W. Main St., Glen Lyon. Memorial visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. to service time. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. in Holy Spirit/St. Adalbert’s Parish, 31 S. Market St., Glen Lyon. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
