At random: In their history, submarines were called by many names such as 'eel boats', 'plunging boats', 'devil divers', and 'pig boats'. Technically, and by size, the submarine is a ship, but it has been called a boat since its earliest days, and the term is steeped in tradition. Submariners almost invariably call their ships 'boats".

I agree 100%

Especially the "capable of handling any situation."

Every place I ever worked, people would remark during the busy season "Tom, how do you remain so calm?"

Interesting thing about this picture is these guys are both Seaman 3rd. Each has only a single stripe on their cuffs. Seaman 2nd would have two stripes and Seaman 1st had three stripes. Shoulder stripe in white meant they were deck div. If they had a red stripe around the left shoulder they'd be Firemen and Black Gang. The guy half seen on the right has three stripes.

Interesting Ric.  All I noticed by the movie theater banner names the photo was mid 40's at the latest.

You wear your dixie cup that way in today's Navy and there be a S&%t storm. Now they put it on square and yank down the sides. It looks terrible that way. But what the heck, I'm an old fart.

That is because we have too many Admirals with nothing to do.
...and they wonder why they are having retention problems!
