COTTON .. .. .. John Pierce Cotton, 86, of Brunswick died peacefully on Jan. 27, 2024 at his home with family. He was born in Winchester, Mass. on Nov. 25, 1937 to Dana M. Cotton and Geraldine Pierce Cotton.  John was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard College. On graduation he was commissioned an Ensign, USNR and served for nine years with sea duty in destroyers and submarines, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. 
After Completing his active duty commitment he began his career in education at Colorado Academy where he taught history, initiated the lacrosse program, and earned a Master’s degree in Asian studies at the University of Colorado.  In 1969, John was appointed Headmaster of Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, NH where he served five years. He was then appointed Headmaster of St. Andrew’s school in Boca Raton, Fla. which met his interest in serving a church related coeducational school. 
After 12 years at St. Andrew’s School, John served as interim Headmaster at St. Stephen’s School in Bradenton, Fla. and interim Headmaster at Francis W. Parker School, Chicago where he was eventually appointed Head.  In 1993 John returned to Florida to serve as Headmaster of Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove. After consulting for a friend with an investment in a not for profit private school in Boca Raton, John joined Chancellor Beacon Academies as Vice President for Institutional Development. During retirement in Maine, John volunteered with several local organizations, He hiked, skied, sailed, and traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. 
John was predeceased by his beloved sister, Rebecca Cotton Christoffersen and his son Nathaniel C.H. Cotton. He is survived by his son John Cotton and his wife Toni of Port Clyde, his daughter Sarah Churchill and her husband Greg of Ipswich, Mass., his son Ethan Cotton of Chicago, Ill., his daughter-in-law Sharon Cotton; his brother-in-law Leif and nephews Erik, Nils, and Leif Christoffersen and their wives and children; and five grandchildren, Carly and Alyx Churchill, Leanna Cotton, Jazmine Foster-Hall, Mackenzie Madison; and one great granddaughter Evelyn Madison.

JOCOBSEN .. .. ..James (Jim) Peter Jacobsen died on Jan. 18, 2024, in Fairfield. He was born July 19, 1938, to Peter and Susan (Hill) Jacobsen in Palo Alto. He was raised and went to school in Marin County. Jim was in the U.S. Navy submarine service from 1956 to 1962. He was later employed by PG&E until 1993. He married Carol Robertson in 1974 and they lived in Fairfield until 1980, when they moved to Novato. In 2017, Jim and Carol moved to Paradise Valley Estates in Fairfield.
Jim loved hunting, fishing and cooking. He and Carol traveled extensively in the U.S. and foreign countries. He is survived by his wife, Carol, sister Marlene Worden, cousins, nieces, nephews, Carol’s family members and many loving friends. A funeral mass will begin at 11 a.m. Feb. 7, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Fairfield. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 12 at Valley Memorial Park in Novato.

BLACK . .. ... Franklin Thomas Black, long time resident of Scotchtown, NY, passed away January 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Tomwas born April 12, 1941, to Frank and Mary Black in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated James Madison High School in 1959. He went on to earn his B.S. from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in1964, and his Master's from Fordham University in 1982.
He served in the United States Navy from 1960-1964 as Petty Officer 3rd class. Tom Black was a member of the Submarine Force serving on the USS Piper SS 409 and USS Corsair SS 435.

Tom married the love of his life Eileen Marie Mann on October 2, 1965. He was a member of the New York City Fire Department and served in Engine 323, Engine 290, Ladder 156 and Ladder 37. He was incredibly proud and treasured his years of serving as one of NYC's bravest. Tom went on to his second career as Dean of Students and Guidance Counselor at John S. Burke Catholic
High school in Goshen, NY. He took personal satisfaction knowing that he played a part in shaping the
futures of those under his care.
He was a beloved son and brother, adored husband, loving father, cherished Pop-Pop, treasured uncle
and all around great human being! He was pre-deceased by his wife of almost 50 years, Eileen Black and his sisters Elizabeth Breslin, and Eileen Peat.
He is survived by his daughters Debbie Black of Scotchtown, NY, Christine Black Costello and
husband Tom Costello of Wilton, CT, Jennifer Black Muller and husband Brian Muller of Garrison, NY and his eight grandchildren: Thomas, Cassidy, Halley and Jack Costello and Colin, Brigid, Molly and Liam Muller as well as his two sisters Joan Riccardi and Lora Flanagan. He will also be deeply missed by a large family of nieces, nephews, and close friends.

WENK .. .. .. Dennis James Wenk, a Cold War Submarine Veteran, passed away on December 6, 2019. This loss has deeply moved his family and community in Howell, Michigan. He was born on June 3, 1942, in Howell, Michigan, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1960. His service aboard the Sam Houston submarine until 1969 marked a significant period of his life.Unblock Post
His journey ended surrounded by his loving family, leaving a legacy of courage and dedication. Dennis James Wenk’s life was a testament to his commitment to his nation and family. Dennis James Wenk’s military service was notable. He was aboard the Sam Houston submarine for three patrols during the Cold War. His dedication to his country during this critical period was remarkable. His actions reflected the bravery and commitment of our armed forces.
After his military service, Dennis found success in technology. He worked in RF Communication in Rochester and as an engineer and DJ at WOPI radio in Bristol, TN. His career showcased his technical skills and his ability to connect with others. His voice over the radio left a lasting impression.
Family was central to Dennis James Wenk’s life. He shared his journey with his wife, Virginia, and their daughters. Their love and support formed a strong foundation. Together, they navigated life’s challenges with grace and resilience. Dennis James Wenk leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service. He impacted many lives through his work, his service, and his role as a family man.
His memory will be cherished by those who knew him, as a symbol of devotion to both country and family.


STONE .. .. ..Lewis Eugene "Gene" Stone, 97, passed away on January 28, 2024, in Grand Saline. Born on November 7, 1926, in Mineral Springs, Arkansas, Gene spent over five decades as a cherished resident of Colfax. He seamlessly became an integral part of the community, earning friendships with everyone he encountered. Gene was a dedicated member of the Colfax Baptist Church for many years before recently joining the Colfax United Methodist Church. Additionally, he was an esteemed Mason, proudly associated with the Colfax Masonic Lodge.
During his service in the US Navy from 1943 to 1945, Gene served as a seaman first class on the USS Greenling submarine. Following his military service, he embarked on a career with Greyhound, driving buses until his initial retirement at the age of 55. Not content to rest, Gene continued to drive tour buses for various establishments, including Lone Star Coaches, well into his 80s.
Gene was preceded in death by his mother, Dura Davis, and two children, Tamara Stokes and Jerry Hampton. He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Bobbie Sue Stone of Colfax, three grandchildren – Sarah Stokes, Matthew Hampton, and Andrew Hampton – as well as cousins Linda Webb and Donna Ramsey. His impact is also reflected in the countless friends who will fondly remember him.
A celebration of Gene's remarkable life will be held at a later date, providing an opportunity for friends and family to honor and commemorate the legacy he leaves behind.


SPEARS .. .. ..Johnny Lee Spears, Sr., age 65, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024, at the Freeman West Health Center in Joplin, Missouri.
He was born September 30, 1958, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Marion Lee “John” Spears and Elsie Shaffer Spears. Johnny grew up in Kansas City and later moved to Ft. Scott where he graduated from Ft. Scott High School in 1976. Following graduation, he enlisted with the United States Navy. He served with the Navy for nine and a half years and was stationed in Connecticut and Virginia. He served as a missile technician on submarine crews. Johnny married Kathy Seal in June 1983. Following his discharge from military service, the family relocated to Texas for several years prior to returning to the Ft. Scott area. Johnny completed the Harley Davidson program at Ft. Scott Community College. He worked for a year at a Harley Davidson dealership in Louisiana. Johnny loved listening to music and reading. In earlier years he enjoyed fishing and recently had taken up the hobby of grilling and smoking meat. He was a great fan of the Las Vegas Raiders and of NASCAR. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Kathy, of the home; three children, April Sloan (Robert) of Pittsburg, Kansas, Jennifer Spears of Covington, Kentucky and Johnny L. Spears, Jr., of Ft. Scott; eight grandchildren, Michael Woodward, Michelle Robinson, Kyle, Brady and Scott Sloan, and Aliziegh, Marley and Astonia Spears and three great-grandchildren, Anthony, Avery and Alexander Robinson. Also surviving are four brothers, Danny Spears, Warsaw, Missouri, Kenny Spears Fulton, Kansas, Jessee Spears, Pleasanton, Kansas and John Jenkins, of Nevada, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Crystal White and a sister, Lillian Vanderford.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Thursday, February 1st at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Johnny Spears Memorial Fund and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.
