At random: Fleet Admiral Halsey in a book called "The Admirals" when asked "What is the ultimate strategic weapon that is bringing the enemy to its knees? Halsey's reply "If I had to give credit to the instruments and machines that won us the war in the Pacific, I would rank them in this order: SUBMARINES, FIRST; RADAR, SECOND; PLANES, THIRD AND BULLDOZERS FOURTH."

GIVENS ... ...Dustin Givens passed away after a sudden diagnosis with an aggressive form of cancer. He spent his final weeks surrounded by friends and family, reminiscing about favorite memories and times spent together, even spending time with his beloved dog while in the hospital. He is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer; his doting father, Richard (Lanne) Givens; many extended family members he gained through marriage and a mass of friends and their children, all of whom will miss him immensely. He is preceded in death by his dear mother, Susan Givens.
Dustin was an avid golfer, an overall athlete, a wanderlust, a connoisseur and brewer of tasty beer, and a life-long learner. He attended NC State, where he met the love of his life, and graduated with a BA in International Studies. After graduation he served in the U.S. Navy as a Nuclear Electrician aboard a submarine. Upon discharge, he returned to his alma mater to earn his BS in Electrical Engineering.
During his undergraduate studies, he found a job working in the semiconductor industry, and took to it quickly. He enjoyed working with the latest tech from cell phones to EV chargers. Most recently, Dustin returned to school at UNC-G and earned his MBA. He subsequently started a new job as a Marketing Intelligence Manager for Wolfspeed, where he was able to combine his engineering and business skillsets for an exciting new career.
Dustin's favorite pastime was playing golf at the local country club, which he convinced not only his wife to join, but their good friends as well after crafting a full-blown presentation on the benefits of golf. When he wasn't on the golf course, Dustin enjoyed spending time with his wife and fur-kids, watching NC State & Panthers games, hiking, going on adventurous vacations, brewing beer in the garage, and trail running at the local parks.
Dustin always had a race on his horizon. Over the last seven years he completed several races, including trail marathons, an adventure race, triathlon sprints, a few half Ironmans, and his proudest accomplishment, a full Ironman in Lake Placid, NY. At the time of his cancer diagnosis, he was preparing for three upcoming ultra marathons, because one just wasn't enough! His tenacity to endure such challenges powered his will to survive down to his last moments with us.
Dustin had a vision to "retire" early so he could travel and explore the world, but his dream was also to return to school one (supposedly) final time to study fermentation science. He had hoped to one day open Streets Ahead Brewing Co. with one of his best friends. He spent many evenings exchanging texts dreaming up their plans, including a laundry list of potential names for their brews. Undoubtedly, the first beer released would have been the most delicious NE IPA that he was famous among his friends for.
Dustin will forever be remembered for his easy going "be cool" attitude, his zest for life and adventures, and his love for his family and friends. A celebration of life will be held in early 2024.

GREEN .. .. Richard Loring Green, 85, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.
He was born on Aug. 28, 1938, to the late Garnett and Marguerite “Peggy” (O’Hara) Green of Lubec. Richard graduated Lubec High School in 1956. On Aug. 16, 1956, he joined the U.S. Navy and served for three years. He served on the Perch, Capitaine, and Nautilus submarines. Richard married Linda May (Dyke) Green on Sept. 4, 1964, after meeting on a blind date. They were married for 56 years before her passing in 2020. They raised their three children in Harrison and moved to Hartford in their later years to be near his aging in-laws.
After leaving the service, Richard worked on radio towers in Cutler as a civilian employee of the Navy for three years. During that time, he also worked as a professional scuba diver. He then spent a long career in construction and short and long-haul truck driving. In his spare time, Richard enjoyed tinkering on his trucks and other machinery, watching football and featherweight boxing; canoeing and kayaking; taking day trips to sightsee and enjoy Maine; and eating ice cream with his wife. He loved dogs, and if you saw him around town, you would have seen a very well-behaved dog in his passenger seat. He didn’t like music with vocals, preferring instrumental music, though Johnny Cash was the exception. In his words, Johnny Cash was the only singer he could sing along with.
Richard was a devoted father and grandfather and would do anything he could for the people he loved. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Jan Green; his brother and sister-in-law Leith and Rose Dyke; his children, Melissa Curit, Aaron Green, and Valorie Wimmer and her husband Steve; his grandchildren Rachel Curit and her husband Benjamin Reis, Mariel Curit, Abigail Johnson and her husband Benjamin, and Audrey Wimmer; his great-grandson, Finnegan Curit Reis, as well as nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends who loved him dearly.
Richard was predeceased by his wife Linda Green; his parents, Garnett and Peggy Green; his younger brother Peter Green; and his in-laws, John and Jean Dyke.
The family would like to express immense gratitude to the staff at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta for the care and comfort they provided Richard in his final year. Also, thank you to Beacon Hospice Care for keeping him comfortable in his final days.
The family is planning a funeral service in the spring.
