MEALS .. .. Robert Nelson (Bob) Meals Santa Fe, NM- Robert Nelson Meals Jr., 81, formerly of Burnt Hills, NY, died Nov. 30 at home in Santa Fe, NM.
Bob was born in Schenectady, NY, to Robert N. Meals, a "silicone pioneer" chemist for GE and Eileen (Caley) Meals, a microbiologist. Bob graduated from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School in 1960; his close friendships with several classmates endured until his death, and he was appreciated for his great wit and curiosity about all subjects. In 1961, Bob was awarded a NROTC scholarship at Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA, where he received a degree in English in 1964. In 1961, he served on a ship that plucked astronaut Gus Grissom, the second American astronaut to fly in space, from the ocean, and in 1962 he was on a ship steaming towards Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. A US Navy officer from 1964 -1969, he began with a stint in submarines and nuclear power school, after which he served mostly on surface ships based in the Atlantic. His last assignment was teaching marine engineering at Navy OCS in Newport, RI.
Upon leaving the Navy, Bob graduated in 1972 from the University of Pennsylvania Law School with honors and as a member of the Law Review. Bob practiced law for 50 years and passed 5 state bar exams, beginning with Georgia (1972), then Florida (1973), Washington state (1990), Nevada (2002) and California (2003). Bob began his legal career in 1972 in Atlanta, GA, at the Troutman Sanders law firm. In 1975, Bob and two other attorneys formed their own boutique litigation firm, representing such clients as the Anheuser-Busch Companies. Relocating to Washington state in 1990, Bob defended physicians' professional interests, including economic, credentialing, licensing, privileging and peer review issues, and saving the careers of numerous physicians. From 2001 through 2005, Bob was general counsel for Women's Cancer Center, a group of 29 gynecologic oncology surgeons based in California and Nevada.
In 1987, Bob met Barbara "Bunny" Meals, the love of his life. They married in 1988 and in 1990 moved to Whidbey Island in Puget Sound, WA. Bob practiced law in Seattle for the next 24 years and Bunny constructed and operated a 5-star bed and breakfast business known as "Dove House" in Langley, WA, from 1994 - 2011. In 2008, Bob and Bunny bought a home east of Bozeman, MT, where they enjoyed watching black bears, moose, elk and fox pass by regularly. During the next six years, they commuted between Washington and Montana before leaving Seattle for good. Facing the need to downsize as they approached their late 70s, they moved to Santa Fe in April 2022.
Bob loved baseball, first as a high school pitcher and then as a fan, beginning with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1950s and then the Seattle Mariners in the 1990s. He was also an avid sailor who sailed the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Florida and the Caribbean on his boat, the "Alltogether", during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and the waters around Puget Sound and Canada in the 1990s through 2012. Highlights were a 2-week "blue water" trip in 1979 from the British Virgin Islands to Florida with a stop only in Cap Haitian, Haiti, to replenish fuel, water and spend a day sightseeing, and a 2-week trip through the Grenadines in 1978. Bob also enjoyed his many other family trips, exploring most of the Western national parks, with numerous visits to their favorite, Yosemite, as well as reading, driving old BMW 2002s, and dabbling in model railroading.
Besides his wife, Bob is survived by a sister, Sarah F. Meals of Newbury, MA; a brother, Christopher C. Meals (Cindy) of Naperville, IL; three stepchildren from a previous marriage - Judy "Chyna" Darby of Santa Cruz, CA; Claire D. Joiner (Mark) and R. Clifton Darby (Chic), both of Gainesville, GA; two other stepchildren, Dr. Joanna York of Charlotte, NC and Rachel (Kate) Meals of Oklahoma City, OK, and several nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ellen C. Meals; a brother, Michael E. Meals; and a stepson, John M. Edwards III.
Burial will be private at the Santa Fe National Cemetery for veterans.
