Air raid, Pearl Harbor! This is NO drill!

Not just American history, but mine too.

61 years ago today I enlisted in the Navy Reserves.
59 years ago today I reported to the receiving station Long Beach for active duty. Subsequently assigned to the USS Excel, MSO-439
56 years ago today I was released from active duty, and departed the USS Excel at Long Beach
55 years ago today I received my Honorable Discharge from the Navy Reserves.

For all those who gave their lives in defense of this great nation, for all those who served in the military, Hand Salute!

It was the first thing I thought about this morning (other than where the bathroom was and why it keeps getting farther and farther away)
Hung Old Glory out in the rain. Even weather can't keep her down!

Jon,
I followed you to the same place three years later.  I was just lucky that after they swore us the recruiter mentioned sub pay if we wanted stinky submarines.  Plus we got to play on the Roncador for a year just to learn what chit was along with duty.

I probably stayed in the same transit barracks you did my first night I reported for active duty.  I was sad when I saw the lights of San Pedro near my parent's house in the hills that first night while I worried about what I had signed up for.  However I was just happy I had escaped reporting for my Army date by the skin of my teeth, and wouldn't have find out what Vietnam looked like from a grunt's point of view.
