At random: In their history, submarines were called by many names such as 'eel boats', 'plunging boats', 'devil divers', and 'pig boats'. Technically, and by size, the submarine is a ship, but it has been called a boat since its earliest days, and the term is steeped in tradition. Submariners almost invariably call their ships 'boats".

Been digging through more photos from the late Rick Larson MMCM (SS). Rick had a huge collection which he shared freely with me and we became great friends. Sadly he passed away a number of years go. I often wonder what happened to his collection.

Among a large number of postcards he brought with him during a stay at my house 2007 were these two gems. I sure didn't realize that they were connected at the time and probably he didn't either.

After close study we have come to the conclusion that they were taken at the same time and of the same submarine. USS Octopus running up a harbor after a day of maneuvers The whole crew is on deck getting air after being inside with all the gasoline fumes. Probably one man below to man the engines.
